Ah the asthetics of the empty car.

I don't have an answer for you, but I'm currious why you ask. My first project on my seven was to get the dome light working again,.. I never figured out why the wires would spark (and consequently blow the fuse) but not power the little light bulb in there. I never finished that project because I had too much fun stripping the entire interior, and since I wasn't going to rewire the rear view (hanging wires and all that) there was no reason to fix the dome light.

In other words I want to know why you'd need to knowth the voltage, incase I do decide to fix my dome light sometime this decade.

the door switch is the ground, so you should have 12v at the dome light. i think. i'd be looking in the FSM, its a simple circuit. there is a fuse too.

its the last thing left to fix on my car other than the bitch aka the horn.... i thought it should be 12v..... the fsm isnt really that clear it says its suposed to read 5 watts at one side and 6 at the other end which even if added togeather still wouldent make 12 V looks like another custom job same with the dam horn|

Thanks any ways

This picture shows how a radar detector can be hardwired to the overhead light. The Blue/yellow wire should have 12V with ignition on or off. Black/red wire goes to the door switch. It is grounded when the door is open and nothing when door is closed. The mirror console is grounded by the screws that attach it to the roof. The lights I have been able to repair needed one or the other of the wires to the main bulb holder re-soldered.

Watts are a power rating of the bulb. P=IV or Power (Watts)=Current*Voltage.

Sounds like a bad ground. You should have 12V from one wire, a constant gnd and then a gnd that is triggered by the doors being open. If you are reading 12V with the door open, that means the door gnd and the 12V line are fine. Its the constant ground that is giving you issue.

No power roofs in FBs. My picture is of the back of the console that the mirror attaches to. You have snapped the mirror out of it's base. I removed the two screws that hold the entire assembly to the roof. When you test the voltage, red lead goes to the wire coming from the roof, black lead goes to ground, right. Make sure you have a good ground contact when testing. I've had screwy readings turn out to be me not making good ground contact while testing. The mounting screws I removed are the ground for the lights. One of these would be good to use as your ground.

The bulb is DE3021, unless you are talking about the map reading light (the one that toggles from driver's side to passenger's side)

Corrosion between the contacts and the body. Take them out and lightly wire-brush them,

This is probably obvious, but you have to take the bulb out to measure the voltage properly (aka 'open-circuit voltage').

Otherwise, you're measuring across a resistance, & you only see the drop across the component.
