Is it possible to swap the rear end from an 82 to an 85? They are both automatics and both have drum brakes. I have a second gen so I don't know if there are any differences between 82 and 85. Thanks.

The driveshaft won't fit.

So if I took the driveshaft from the junkyard car would it work? I am asking for a friend who is trying to fix his sister's 85. Thanks.

Since they are both autos, yes. But keep in mind for future reference that the car has an 82 rearend, as the driveshaft, pinion flange (bolt pattern is different), axles and bearings are different (smaller) from the 85.

I would use the older rear and driveshaft. It shouldn't matter on an auto equiped car.

The driveshaft flange is different - you can put the '82's flange on the '85 so you can use the '82 driveshaft.
