Rear seats?

did any 1st gens come with rear seats?
or is ther a way of installing them?

i'd like to be able to carry around more than one person, seeing as how this is my only car.

Edit: now that i see its possible, does anyone have a link to a how-to to do it?

Ya, I think only euorpean cars came with rear seats. I'm not totally sure though. Search around. Welcome to the forum. Check out the faq page, archives, and get used to the search button. I think the only way to install them on your car is custom. God bless

IIRC all non-USDM first gens came w/ rearseats,we didn't get'em due to american crash standards, instead they added 2 more braces and storagebins where the seats were located

some RX-7's came with back seats FB FC and FD. You can use any fb seats in any FB. FC seats need alittle modding to fit. Dono about the FD rear seats.

There arent any kits currently available to my knowledge, your best bet is searching online for one out of a car from overseas. Keep in mind the rear seats are tiiiny, and IMO are prety useless.
If you are upto it though, I believe its possible to modify a 2nd generation RX-7 rear seat to fit into the first gen, but I am not 100% sure on that one. The best looking rear seat would have to be a stock first gen seat, no question.

My main worry with a backseat in the 7 is the insurance factor. They are designated as a 2 seater vehicle, and without looking into ways to keep it legal your just asking for problems should your car ever be involved in an accident. I think it would probably be a hassle to keep the car legal, or why wouldnt mazda have offered the rear seat originally?

Anyways, welcome to the club! Are you new to 7's or just the forum?

P.S. Hope you plan to put the car away this winter! While it can be fun once and a while, on our roads they can be a handfull, I like to declare winter as my time to repair/upgrade my 7's.
Either way, good luck with the car! and I hope to see pictures or something soon!
If you ever need a hand with anything, I offer my assistance with whatever I can! Im always up for helping out the 7 crew.

Take care man, and good luck again!

wow, thanks for the info!
If i get them, it will be more for the "oh **** my friends are ******* drunk im not letting them drive" kind of situation, so being legal isn't really my concern, oh being the straight edge one. sigh...
anyway.

haha, nope, she'll be driven all year 'round, im sixteen and not made of money, so i can only afford one car.

pics when i acquire my car, i was driving a blue ghetto rx-7 for a while, but it was super rusty and dying, so i traded it for a corlla sr-5, now im selling that in favor of a new 1st gen rx-7, black 83, super nice shape, hasn't been actually driven for 12 years, just ran around the block once a month to keep it going.
im stoked.

And i may end up taking up that offer, depending on what i need done!

my very first Rx-7 had a rear seat; burgundy leather. i can vouch for them being useless. unless everyone in the car is freakishly short, forget about driving for any distance with a backseat passenger - note that's singular. it has indentations for two, but you may as well try to put a person in each of your current storage bins.

well, I stand a whole five foot four, and my girl friend is only 5'3 and two best friends are all under 5'7, so the front seats will be pretty colse, so im hoping the rear will have a little room.

i just need to find the seats now...

The rear seats in my SA are good for legless midgets and small dogs.

i'm not sure, but i don't get the feeling that you get what i'm saying. the seats are not really for sitting. the only reason they were put in the car in other countries was because of legal issues. i would speculate that the only reason people got them here were just say they had them - i know that's the only reason i wanted mine.

they serve virtually no functional purpose. from what i remember (i had that car in 1991) even with the front seats set completely forward, there's no way for 2 people to use the backseat. one person could not use and sit with their feet on the floor. my sister is 5'4" (like you, i guess) and she could not sit behind the wheel with the seat all the way forward - i doubt you could drive safely in that position, and the backseat passenger would still not be able to sit upright.

however, if you're hellbent on getting it anyway, the rear seats from the FCs and Porsche 911s will fit in an FB as well. a few of my old friends used seats from each back in the day. you could look for some of those, too, while searching.

My 1980 RX7 has rear seats. The previous owner told me it was a car lot option and not direct from Mazda. Also mine came with a clear glass sun roof. I might be selling mine or parting it out if it can't be fixed. It's rusted over the wheel wells and under the sills, but that's it. I want to see how much it will all cost before deciding. If so I will sell the rear seats to you. I'll let you know in a few days after a body man looks at my car and gives me an idea on how much of a pain in the butt this car is going to be to fix. Too bad for the rust because her interior is A1 and she is mechanically perfect. I just brought her for a day trip and all was great.

You can only fit paraphelegic dwarfs into the rear seats, though...

I waited awhile before posting on this, I have 3 JDM SA all 3 have rear seats i took one of them out and was able to install it very easily into an 85 GSL up to the age of 7 it worked fine for my 2 girls beyond that you are pushing it. It can work with some carseats but not all of them be careful with your selection. Also the rear seat shown IS an aftermarket one, IMO they are very crappy and not worth the money if you are serious try the AUS or JAP forums to try to get one from a JDM first gen i might be able to find a couple of pics of one installed to show the difference, they sit much deeper than this, kind of similar to the FC rear seats, My recommendation for a "FAMILY" rotary of course is an Rx8 assuming you can afford one if not the next one would be an old school RX (considering you can quickly eat up $$ with that neither option is economical) The FC chassis with a rear seat worked much better than using an FB... Hope that this helps you make a choice

All Australian SA22C's (FBs) have rear seats. Mine have been replaced with a custom box tho.

If you are really keen you could get some sent over from here.
