Rear engine noise!

Does anyone know what this might be? At first I thought it was the coil until I put my head under the hood. It almost sounds like its coming from the tranny. But Im not completely sure.

I dont know how to explain the noise other than, a light constant clicking sound-that gets louder and speeds up-with the revs of the engine.

Please help me!

Thanks!

Is it a really fast clicking? Slower? I understand that it rises with the sound of the engine, but it could still be a slow clicking that rises with the sound of the engine . Could it be a vacuum switch on the rats nest tweaking out?

What does the rats nest look like, I think mine is gone!

The clicking is slow, then speeds up when you give it gas!

Thw whole mess of vacuum lines all over the top of the engine. It has a bunch of milti colored vacuum switches and stuff on there.

EDIT: Does the sound happen all the time, only when in gear, only when moving, etc...

Well, Im not sure. I can only hear it when Im outside of the car, and when the hood is propped.

It does sound like its coming from that area.

I dont remember if I heard it before I removed the Air Pump and the ACV.

But when I had it at Rx7 Heaven in Roseville, MN. He checked over my whole car for me,(The owner of the shop is the original owner. He said something about a mushy vacuum line.

Would this do it?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Check and make sure that your sparkplugs arent loose, my mad a ticking sound that increased with rpm and it was a plug that wasnt sealed all the way (could turn it by hand.

If he said something about a mushy vacuum line, why not check all the lines. Maybe one blew apart or isnt sealing and the solenoid or whatever is wigging out on you and clicking on and off or something because it has a false signal...I dont know...Thats a pure guess. Why not take it back and have it checked again and specifically mention the ticking?

Did you solve your clicking noise? I have a 88 (N/A) with the same problem and its driving me nuts. I blocked off the acv, disconnected pulleys ,etc. and the noise stays the same. Its coming from inside the engine but I can't pinpoint it.

Try this, with the engine idling, identify the noise by ear. and then push in the clutch and put the transmission in gear. Did the noise go away??

I had a clicking noise in the rear end after it leaked for so long that it ran out of diff fluid and welded together. Whenever the car reversed or turned corners the rear end would make alot of noise. That was in an older rex and I just bought a new complete rear end.

Well, this thread is pretty old. I thought Id never see it again. This is the problem I had, when I still had my 83. And now I have an 80 as you can see in my sig.

Now with my 83 I was really low on oil, so it caused the engine to make a constant clicking noise, that raised with the RPM's.

But thank god that I dont have that prob with my 80!

Have a good one everybody!

Talking

That ticking noise you hear when your oil is low is just your lifters...

It sound just like a stuck lifter. Clutch makes no difference. You can hear it clearly under the car as well. It's seems to be coming more from the left side of the engine.

How often do you check the oil?
"My engine is making a noise."
"Does it have any oil?"
"Oil? Yeah, I just put some MMO in the tank last month."
