Rear end went ka-poot....
Well after a friday night at LACR and a saturday night of going to the street races (which I only watch.. honestly ) and a bit of driving to work, my rear end is just about... well gone.. the spider gears seezed up on me today on the way home, and I had to limp it home. Also have a feeling I knocked a few teeth off of the ring gear. So what are my opitions.. I don't have allot of money and I don't feel like getting another open rear just to go out on me, this was my second old *** and cranky rear end I've had man and I haven't had a problem with the car since my old motor went.
On a plus side my rear end is a locker now traction is great if I'm going in a strait line
Would it be better to hunt down a gsl rear, or get a 8.8 rear or a 9 inch rear built up. I'm kinda on a budget and I don't feel like my intrest rates to go even higher, so what should I do? Any one got a GSL rear in GOOD condition with the driveshaft laying around? Or even better one with the proper brake line adapter for my 79?
matt

if you could have waited one month, i would have an entire setup for you (i am going to try and sell my 79 in the beginning on january).
but otherwise, might as well go to a junk yard and get a new rear end. .just make sure and test to see if the lsd works before you pull it.

Thanks riffraff I wish I could wait a month too, but I only have two weeks, my dad is outta town so I can use his mustang but only for two weeks...
Well I found a GSL but it had a open rear end with Drum brakes?!?! WTF?
Junkyards in Ventura are scarse of GSLs... plenty of GS's tho.. blah
Anyone on the board some-what close to me that knows of a rx-7 haven?
thanks,
matt

If you want to go ahead and do a 9 inch conversion go to grannysspeedshop.com, all you have to do is tell them how wide you need it. They make all the brackets like stock so it just bolts in.
What kind of HP are you running to go threw two rear ends?

Estimated, I'm running somewhere in the 180+ hp range.
Both of the 79 rears were rather beat when I got them... The first was already on the car when I got it with 170,000 miles on it and second had about 150,000.
I'm going to call up mariah motorsports today and see if by any chance they have some laying around, if not I just thought of one junkyard i rember seeing a disc rear end at, but that was months ago tho.
How ironic, a day before my rear-end went I was looking at grannysspeedshop.com.
Well like I said I'm gonna try locally if not I'll get in contact with you Sorrow, I'll need the full disc to disc rear end along with the driveshaft of course.
thanks,
matt
