rear end trouble...advice?

my car sounds like a washing machine when i drive. i thought it was the rear end (LSD from a GLS) so i checked and there is play in the drive shaft. Is there any remedy for this, or am i looking at replacement? anyone encountered this? i have a LSD from a se, anyone wanna tell me what'd be involved in the swap? i have the gsl-se rims, but i dont wanna change my rims, cause they have new rubber and the se rims dont not to mention they wouldn't match the front rims...advice? anyone? help?

it could be a wheel bearing, have you checked them?

all rear ends have play in the rear ends, dont worry about that...
the se lsd is a easy swap, pull the axles, driveshaft, remove all 12mm bolts holding the pumpkin it and remove ,.... assembly is the reverse, its pretty easy

what do you mean by free play?

You need to check the fluid in the diff and in the tranny as well.

use synthetic fluid, gear oil 75/90, 80/90 either or, and you need to get the LSD additive.

I've got some noise coming from my rear end also. Increases with speed. It's an '85 with drum brakes. Is there a quick way to inspect/check the rear wheel bearings?

where are you in MS bouis?

a good way to check the bearings is to jack up one rear tire and take ti off, put one lug bolt back in so you can turn the axle
turn it slowly, if you hear a scraping sound coming from right behind the drum/disk the bearing is bad

do this for both sides

Hatttiesburg. But I'm currently stuck in Poplarville 'till I can get my car going. I'm rebuilding the front suspension, but I can't do anything with one balljoint and one tie rod end. Thanks AutoZone!

i've heard axle bearing failure is pretty common on these cars. i just had my passenger side axle bearing replaced. cost me $100 to have it done for me (i don't have a press).

Have you pinpointed the noise?
If it's coming from the rear of the car, have someone drive the car and hop in the back and have a good listen to see if it's coming from a certain side. From your description I would lean towards a rear wheel bearing. If you decide to change the rear wheel bearing, I would put in that LSD from the GSL-SE that you have, since you already have the axle pulled.

Thanks wwilliam54 but it'll be here tomorrow. Like I said, I'm currently in Poplarville which is a ways down, but I'll be back in Hattiesburg this weekend. If you wanna meet up sometime, that'd be great. I'm sure you'd like to give my new CP rack & pinion a try .
