They interchange in the 84-85 models with the large axle rear ends. I prefer the GSL lsd because it engages tighter due to the arrangement of discs. There should be a writeup on the differences in the archives by Steve84GS.

was there ever LSD with drum brakes? i havent tore into my axle yet but will soon and i have drum brakes but it doesnt seem like an open diff because i have never had a one wheel burnout its always 2 from a stand still or going straight or doing donoughts its always two, but recently my axle started making a clunk noise when acceleration or turning so thats why im asking these ?s ill be taking it apart soon to find out whats really going on and if its really LSD or not and if not i want to put a true LSD in

When I saw the title of this post I thought it was going to be about the PIIDB mod.

AFAIK the LSDs started with the '81 GSL, which had on rear wheel disc/drum combo (drum for park brake only) and continued on only in cars with this combo e.g. GSL, GSL-SE (and post-1st-gen, disc only)

guess ill just have to pull her apart and see for myself lol, what do u think the clunking is? it only seems to clunk in the following situations: turning, stopping, costing with clutch to floor or in neutral.

Have you checked the bearing on that axle?

check the bearing. Years back I experienced a kind of grinding noise at low speeds e.g. rolling up to a red light and my left outer axle bearing was bad.

If you are looking to upgrade to a LSD rear end, the easiest option is the GSL. That will let you keep the same wheels, give you disc brakes, and is a very straight forward swap.

Some members also say that you need to change the master cylinder and proportioning valve. I won't argue with them, but I will say that I did not do that and my brakes work great.

If the -SE third member is going into the "85 12A" listed in your sig file then yes, it will bolt in. You can retain your current axles and housing.

I am working on a complete swap document - not 100% complete yet:

Ah, I misread your question. Didn't realize you want the LSD without changing the brakes, etc.

the parking brake on the rear disc 7's was not a drum in disc parking brake. the the pads clamp the rotor to hold the car while the parking brake is engaged.

You're correct. I was misremembering, thrown off by how thick the centre sections of the rear rotors are.
