rear end question...

ok. i broke my rear end somehow...im thinking becuase the suspension is too stiff or somerthing. Its a Gsl rear end. ive got a parts car sitting out im my back yard, but the rear end is just a gs. i dont plan on putting that rear end in my car, because it is gay and has drum brakes and no lsd.

So my question is, can i use the housing/casing for the gs rear end and use the guts and what not from the gls rear end and still be decent? or do i need a new rear end.

If i do need a new rear end, is anybody selling or parting out a gsl and would be willing to get rid of their rear end for cheap sometime soon?
thanks

I'm still unclear as to how a rear end can be homosexual, or any other inanimate object is, unless you can explain how, don't say gay. Also, in most tests, cars with drums up front and discs in back stop in more distance than a car with drums all around because the discs lock up and you have to back off

How the hell did you break your rear end?? I had 350 RWHP with 275 50 15 Nitto 555R drag slicks and never broke mine. And, my suspension was stiff.

Hey, it is easy to tear up a rearend. I did on my 85 SE. At the track on street tires. Reved to 4200 and popped the clutch..........BAM, 3 holes in the housing and it was over.

As for the housings.........What year? I don't think that they will swap......unless you do the intire rear with GS axles and housing. The GSL and the GSL-SE 84 & 85 yrs, had bigger axles. However since you didn't post the years of the cars...................????

The housing is different for the disk brake rear ends. The drum rears have 4 holes (i think) to mount the drum backing plate to, while the disk rears have tabs welded on to mount the caliper bracket to. Unless your a really good fabricator and/or welder just find yourself another rear end. Or just put the LSD in the GS rear and keep the drums...

The "chunk" is the 3rd member, or "pumpkin", the fat thing inside the fat part of the housing with the gears on it.

Drums are WAY easier to lock up than discs. Have you ever driven a car with all drums? EVER?

Also please name me one car that had drums up front and discs in the rear???

well, if they are both 82's. for a temporary fix you can just change the pumpkins. keep the disc brakes and all. then when you get the lsd pumkin rebuilt, you can transplant it in without all the heart ack of replaceing the whole rar-end( wich isn't all that difficult, but why do it). hope this helps you out some.

humm...mabey im not understanding what you guys are telling me, or mabey i didnt explain it well enough. correct me if im wrong, but isnt the housing the metal that covers the axel and such? if that is correct, then the way that my rear end broke is that the housing cracked comepletely around the entire thing...right next to the rear passenger side wheel. i was taking my wheels off beucase i thought it was a brake problem and after further inspection i saw the destroyed rear end. the lsd is still good, so i dont need to replace that or get it rebuilt. i think that better explains my situation.
