Exclamation Rear Differential

Hey Guys,

I get a vibration at around 4k rpm's in second gear if I keep it there for a second. The previous owner went to the Mazda Dealership and they said I would need a whole new drive shaft, $300.

I've got two questions for you...

1) Where can I find the Rear Differential Gasket, I need good stuff, not crap that will blow as soon as I give it the gas.

2) Where can I find the U Joint & Driveshaft at if it does turn out to be the culprit; the driveshaft has never been replaced mind you.

Thanks,
Eric

Wow, driveshaft not cheap, as for a gasket I use the high temp sealant. The red stuff. I have had no leaks since I put the rearend in over a year ago.

There is a bearing on the pinon gear inside your rear end.... chances are that is what is causing you vibrations. Can you hear a humming or some sort of noise coming from the back of the car?

I don't have a gasket either on the pumpkin of the diff, however there is a rubber seal that can leak that is on the diff right behind where the driveshaft bolts up to. (On the other side of that seal is where the bearing that I mention sits)

I have used that stuff for years, on heads, thermostats, valve covers, even fuel pumps on diesles.

And yes double check your driveshaft u-joints.

You can usually find driveshafts used pretty cheaply. Try posting in your "local section" of the rx7club

Well,

We've pinpointed the leak, it's where the two half’s meat.

As for the humming, how hard is it to fix that problem? I'd probably end up buying higher gears (better acceleration, 4.10's, etc) just while I'm in there, is there special tools you need, etc?

I'm off to bed for the night, I'll read the replies in the morning,

Thanks!
Eric

Actually 4:10 is a lower gear. The higher the number the lower the gear, lower number higher gear.

McKenna is what Im using now. Best one to use but requires more work to separate parts like oil pan, valve covers etc.

I'm having that humming fron the rear end, I thought it might be
a bad wheel bearing at first, but I'm pretty shure it's coming from
inside the pumpkin.

Where would one get a replacment for that bearing on the pinon gear.

Thanks

Chuck E.

Well,

I saw one at Mazdatrix.com for $30.00 but I don't have any instructions in front of me to do the swap, anyone care to inform me on how to swap the bearings?

Thanks,
Eric
