Rear Axel Sawp Questions

I have an 83 S model and found an LSD from an 83 GSL, I plan on swapping the complete axel. I searched and found that I will be able to hook up my driveshaft without any problems since all 83's had large flanges.

I also found that there were different master brake cylinders for disc and drum brakes, and that a proportioning valve needed to be swapped too? Reading even further it seems that the proportioning valve is internal to the master, so swapping in a master would be all I need to do?

On top of the master cylinder and proportioning valve, I just need disc e-brake cables and the rear half of the brake lines? Am I missing anything?

Small correction. Not all 83 models have the larger flanges. There is a break in the production dates. Some have small, others have large. If you have the small on your Gs then you will need a different driveshaft.

Hmm I didn't know that, I thought all 83's were large flange. How do you tell if I have large or small?

If the bolt spacing on your flange is approx 2.5 inches center to center then yours is the bick flange.

I am also thinking about doing the same exact thing on my 85 Gs.

Rx7doctor, if I get an 85 GSL LSD would I need to do anything different than what stealthGXL is going to do?? E-brake cables, etc?

I really app. it, Thanks!

Alright, so my only question now is about the master cylinder/proportioning valve. If I get a master cylinder for disc that takes care of the proportioning valve too??

The proportioning valve is not part of the Master cylinder. It is the component that is bolted onto the front of the power brake unit and has all of the lines attached to it. When I did a swap from a S model to a Gsl I did not use the Gsl proportioning valve and had no problems. But if you have access to the Gsl one I would use it.

i read somewhere that it is just bearing of sorts, that is spring loaded to hold pressure against the drum when your not breaking. and that it can easily be removed.

I am doing the same swap on my 83 LE shortly...Let me know how the cables for the E-Brakes hook up..I am worried about that...I heard that you can use the same master and lines, other than the brake hoses...

Sorry, I am a little confused So do you *have* to replace the master cylinder when doing this swap, or just the proportioning valve? Or both? Thanks!

Ryan, it is recommended that you replace both.
