Re-Finishing Rims?

I have a set of Panasport Rims. They are Pealing and caroading.. How hard is it to Re-finish rims? Anyone ever tried it? I am taking off the old paint with Paint Stripper (what a pain in the ***)... I wish i had a sand blaster! Anyone know what the best paint is to use when re-spraying them? Is it hard to get the paint to stick? Also, should i prime the m before i paint them? Sorry about all the questions. Thanks for the time. Rotary-Rex

I've a guy that does it, and reasonably inexpensively too. I'm sure if you call around you can find one in your area.

you could just give them to me and buy some new ones. that would probably be your easiest solution. :P

try going to a body shop and get them powercoated.. that would probally be best... otherwise if you want to do it yourself.. prime and paint and clearcoat

I did call up a shop that Re-finishes rims and they wanted 435.00 for all four.... Thats really not worth it if you think about it. I could just order up some new ones for a little more than 435.00. Maby if i prep them, it will be cheaper to just get them sprayed. Thanks for the help. -Rotary-Rex

Look in the Eastwood Catalog. They sell a home powder coating kit. You just have to buy the powercoating, sprayer, and a air compressor if you dont already have one. and you can powerder coat them yourself. Its acutally pretty cool, you just stick the wheels in the oven. Im not real sure how much it is, but they have a webpage, http://www.eastwoodcompany.com/

Ditto, where? Also, I agree with the others when they say that powder coating might be better. Although, paint can look good when done right .

By saying "A little more" i meant i would be better off just buying new ones. I know they cost more than 435.00. But 435 is an awful lot just to get these rims re-done..

My friend paints cars for a dealership and when I asked him about painting some wheels for me, he told me that the cost of the proper materials would cost almost as much as powdercoating them locally for about 25-35 bucks a wheel. We have a bunch of places locally that do powdercoating so there is some competition which helps keep the price down. If you're going to paint them, get the toughest catalyzed epoxy paint you can get and bake the wheel in the oven after spraying it. That makes the paint tougher and more scratch-resistant. Even spray-can epoxy paint can work well if it is baked to make it hard. That's the cheapest way to go, but it's very hard to get the kind of adhesion afforded by the professional 2-part paints and primers.
They will hold up to most non-etching wheel cleaners pretty well.

if you are going to go throuhg the hassle you might as well do it properly once.go get them sandblasted and the take them to get powder coated. that is simply the best sollution.might cost 400 bucks if you go to smaller shops that need the work.shouldnt be more than 25 per wheel to blast and no more than 75 per wheel to coat .dont pay more than that .you can find those prices with a little bit of research.

beads don't have the hard corners that sand has, so it doesn't score the metal as much...

congrats!

When I refinished my rim I wet sanded the rim and then used a real fine wet sand paper to finish it, and bought some clear coat from autozone and sprayed. It turned out good, but I think if I polished it before spraying it would have been shinnier. Autozone also has a graphite and aluminum colored wheel spray.
