Ran like crap, now won't start.

Back story.

I got my 85 gsl for free from a shop that tried to use it for a parts car, but had no car to use it as a parts car for. They sold off a few things, such as the fuel pump, most of the interior, the distributor rotor, cap, and wires, and the blue filter housing. I replaced those pieces with junkyard stuff (except for the distributor cap, which is new). With the help of a buddy, I got it running. At first, it idled fine. I even drove it around a bit. It got less and less power (seemingly) every time I drove it. Unfortunately, one day it just up and died on me. I was taking a short run down my street when it started acting like it was out of gas (very likely possibility). I put about 5 gallons in the tank, but it didn't do anything. It would start if I primed the carb, but only for a few seconds, again acting like it wasn't getting any fuel. I disconnected the fuel line at the carb and directed it into a glass jar (since I have no pressure meter). I cranked the engine for a bit and a steady stream of fuel came out into the jar. I reconnected the fuel line (thinking that it would've cleared the engine if I had flooded it), but to no effect. Today, it wouldn't start even if I primed the carb. Again, it's still got fuel pressure, and all of the electronics seem to be in order. It chortles every once in a while like it's trying to start, but refuses to do so.

My suspicions lie with the carb, since there seems to be fuel and spark. This is because it spent two years sitting out in the open after the filter housing had been taken off, and it looks like there's some crud on the butterfly valves for all four barrels. There's only a bit, but I'm afraid it's just a sign of the condition of the rest of the carb.

Sorry for the length. O rotary gurus, any advice?

Have you actually seen spark? I'm wondering if you might have an ignition issue, since it won't start by priming anymore.

Also, did you check out the FAQ section, the artice "the end to all no start threads"? If not, then that would be a great source for you. Good luck...

I've got spark at all 4 wires, but it seems a little weak, at least compared to the last time I checked the spark on a boinger. Then again, I didn't pull the plugs, and used a fairly clean used spare spark plug. The plugs in the car should be good, and I cleaned them about a month ago. Even then, they were a nice, healthy brown. Other than pulling my plugs and cleaning them, what could I be looking for?

New plugs can fuel foul in less than 30 seconds with too much fuel. However, sounds like it's time for a carb rebuild, after you check your plugs.
