rain --> wet interior

We had some rain here in Seattle recently... and the interior of my GSL-SE got soaked. The spare tire well was filled with water, the rear carpet was soaked, and the driver's-side carpet also got soaked. Because of the rear area, I figure either a taillight seal or the rear hatch seal is bad.

Right now the car is in the garage, and the rear area is dried out, and the storage bins have been removed and dried. There's just one small problem -- I've used a wet-dry vac on the driver's-side carpet, but that carpet is still wet even after 5 days of using a floor heater and industrial dehumidifier inside the car. I'm thinking of towing the car to a local "automotive upholstery" place, to have that area of carpet dried and treated.. I mean, it's been wet for a week..

Do you think the car is drive-able to an upholstery place? What electrical systems are in the carpet under the driver's seat?

Thanks in advance, and happy New Year!

You may want to take a look at your drain lines too. There are four on the sunroof and two in the back on the inside of the cargo area by the tail lights. If they get cloged you may get water passed the seals. Try a garden hose and see if water is goes freely through and out the bottom of the car. A metal coat hanger could be used to help break free any clogs.

I had the same problem on mine, and found several areas leaking. The rear hatch support strut was loose where it attaches to the glass. Also, my rear drain tubes were not clogged, but they were leaking where the tube attaches to the body on the inside of the rear deck panel. Unfortunatly, I found my leak too late and the rear cargo jute padding is ruined and the cover panel between the storage compartments and the spare tire well is rusted quite badly. I just found this out about a week ago. So now I have to pull the storage bins out to see how bad it is under there.
Hope that you are able to get your carpet dried out ok.
Later,
Bill

Thank you. I'll check all of those things.

Bill, I hope yours is just surface rust.

I still wonder if the car is driveable with the wet carpet under the driver's seat.. I don't know what electrical connections might be under there.

same prob here, i thought it was the door seals, so i put a bunch of silicone around where it looked like it was coming from. but the spot on the drivers side floor is like a spot of water, it isnt directed from the door, kinda weird. i'll have to try and see if the drain plugs on the roof are plugged...

I know this is a horrible shot, but you can see the damage I found. Incidently, anywhere that is painted red in the car has no rust on it. Just the parts like the panel that weren't painted red at the factory rusted out. Interesting.

Bill

Actually, that pic makes it look alot worse than it is. That pile is actually the jute padding that was soaked. The rust on the panel looks real bad because it was still wet. I think I can repair the panel once I get it out and down to bare metal. The rest of the bad looking stuff is just slime from the water sitting in there for a while.
Here are some pics of the rest of the car.
