which radio????
which radio????
I've finally decided to dump the awesomeness that is the stock radio in my 85 se and get an aftermarket radio. I'm not a huge stereo buff and don't care about having the latest greatest "system" in my car, all I want is a decent head unit with RCA inputs so I can plug my ipod in directly, anybody have any suggestions?
Those radios look pretty nice but aren't exactly what i'm looking for. I don't want to lug around a case full of cd's to listen to, i've got every song I own on an ipod and want to plug it directly into the head unit. I could swear i've seen radios that allow you to do that and that will give me much better sound than a tape adapter or fm transmitter for an ipod (there's basically no treble of any type with a transmitter).

amd have auxuliary RCA inputs for your IPOD.
Plus, they light up in 8 different colors, to match any dash lighting.
Check out the Crutchfield site to see if there is anything you like. I noticed there are several Alpine units that have "optional AUX inputs", looks like that eliminates the XM tuner input though. You could run a mini-jack to RCA cable connected to the AUX input cable of the Alpine. When you're not using the iPod just stash the cable somewhere out of sight.

Have you looked at any HDD-based head units which you could then copy everything over from your ipod? A looked about a year ago and wanted to give them a little more time to mature. Given that all your content is mp3 it might be a good option for you.

if you have your deck plugged into an amp with the 2 stereo cables...(black and red) can you just unplug your deck...(or make a proper switch) and use a 1/2 inch to 2 plug adapter...and plug your ipod/whatever directly into your amp...or would that fry everything?

I just did a quick check of the Sony cdx units and didn't notice an obvious aux hookup on them, guess I should have read a bit more in depth about them. I just want to run out of the stereo minijack to some rca ends and plug it into the unit, stash the cable when not in use like dblboinger said.
