Radiator Setup.....

Hello guys,

Now that the body restoration part is over, I need to start with all the mechanics...

Thinking about the radiator, which setup are you guys running???

Checking out eBay, they all look quite the same and price around $130 like this one.

ALUMINUM RADIATOR FOR 1979-1985 MAZDA RX7 RX-7 S1 S2 S3 3ROW MT

This one is $200... looks the same to me

radiator

I got one from DNA Motoring on ebay. The first one got the lower got inlet bent a little in shipping. I could have straightened it but I told them. They had me send it back, they paid for return, refunded me some money and sent me another radiator.
It works great and runs so much cooler than my old stock one. The price was very reasonable.

Here's a link to ebay.

bought an Ebay radiator...much like the one you picked. Many are the "Champion" brand, and that is what I got.saw them advertised in the"Race Pages" (Drag Race publication) must be good...LOL... look carefully at the different units, as some have drains and some do not.....also, different bungs for accessories..if that matters)....so, just look closely before you choose; I think mine is great! I have the petcock drains and provisions for additional coolers...paid $160 total, build quality is great, quick shipping ...lowered water temp (on the needle) by a whole bunch.

$102 ebay 3-core alum. Perfect match to old OE unit (based on side-by-side, see pix). As SkyDrift sez, many of the ebay units are basically the same one, with different names (but all with same CA delivery point). Shipping was even FREE to Alaska, which is Epic. Not installed, so caveat on user-quality, but looks and feels well made. Figured it was worth $100 to find out...

These Champion 3 core rads are pretty good but not perfect. You may need to trim the tabs a little or re-drill a mounting hole and the heater output my not be clocked perfectly but overall not bad. I noticed on mine it hit the battery tray a little. Still a good buy.

My plans are to replace the input and output with -24AN fittings, change the overflow to a -4AN, and put a better petcock on. I don't like the plastic one and want one I can control the output when draining.

-24 is huuuuuge?! The setups I've seen with AN fittings mostly seem to be -16. Some using -20. They're the sizes that come on EWP adapters also haha. I'm planning -16

I could be wrong on the -24 size. I couldn't remember the exact size.

The tanks kept separating from the core in under 6 months all same fail ended up getting refunded but took months i put a csf oem style back on it anyhow need something now for the t2 swap in 1st gen something ill trust in heavy traffic at 119 degree temps

This thread is gold, I'm curious to see what comes of it. I'll be shopping for an aftermarket radiator sometime soon to replace the old SA radiator setup I'm going to be using.

Hey Buddy, how are you???

Did you ever got a new radiator???

Since I'll have the car looking like the new from factory, I'm leaning towards Spectra Premium...

Now, I'm quite intrigued since they have completely different sizes for an 82 and 85. Shouldn't they be the same???

The 82 RX-7 has a front mount oil cooler, the 1985 is the beehive. The 82 needs to be shorter because of the oil cooler. I have the CU97 in my 1985 12A and it's great. I'm sure the CU701 is just as good.

I'll get the CU97 for sure. It's bigger and $40 cheaper than the small one. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!!!!

Is it too much to ask if you could post a picture of your car? I wanna see how it looks....

If you have a US spec 1982, the CU97 will not work with the front mount oil cooler. It too tall.

I do have an 82 US Specs, however my engine bay is completely empty. I'm starting from scratch... So I guess I could set it up as the 83-85 specs right?

By the way, nice fan shroud you have... quite clean!!!!

Since you have a clean slate, you have many ways to go. I like the taller rads for the extra cooling. If you want to use the stock mounting location for the front mount oil cooler, a short rad will be required.

You could make your own cooler mount and hoses and move it forward. Just depends on how much fab work you want to do. This is what I did in my 1985 that had the beehive. I moved the cooler forward and used the CU97 rad.

Yup, I think the same way. I prefer the taller radiator for extra cooling, and definitely I can place the oil cooler somewhere else. I really don't mind relocating....
