Racing Tips?

Alright,

I've got a few questions, assuming the car is stock GSL-SE;

1) What RPM should I launch at? I've seen a focus squeal the tires out of the hole and win vs. someone chirping the tires on launch.

2) What's the optimum shift point for each gear? I've heard that you may feel its out of 'umph' and your brain tells you to shift but in reality that its still pulling and its best to wait for a few more hundred RPMs.

3) Shift Hard & Fast or Slow & Soft?

All tips are accepted, I think I’m too new to the whole shifting thing and really not bringing my cars potential out until I learn to race a little better; I’ve been driving an auto since I started racing.

Spinning the tires on the launch can sometimes be better than hooking them. If you hook them at a low RPM you will be out of the powerband and somebody spinning them a bit will pull right away from you. Spinning the tires is completely different than blowing them off though (mustang guys billowing smoke through the 1/8th mile).

1) For my first gen i have the best luck at 5000 feathering the clutch on the launch. On my old TII I did 4000 RPM clutch drops on the two-step at 5psi for the best results. Every car is different so experience will be your best bet here. First time out...start launching around 4k and do what you can from there.

2) If your car is stock than shift in the upper 6000's, again each car is different.

3) This depends on if you are willing to replace things if you break them. Shifting as quickly as possible withough losing traction will yield both the best times and the most broken parts.

Hmm,

Well I thought maybe since you'll be higher in the power band (rotary engines liking) that it might start off faster.

It's partially stock, most are suspension mods but I do have the small things done like coils, etc.

Well, at first I could bark the 1-2 shift but now the throw out bearing is going bad I think and the clutch seems like it sticks (master cylinder me thinks).

w00t another first gen!

Well, it's pretty boring, the jobs suck, nothing to look forward to except the sparse cops...it's a SMART speed demons dream.

I commonly hit 100 MPH+ when I feel like it...street racing happens a lot around here because the nearest drag strip is almost two hours away for two passes for the night (boring waiting 30 minutes in-between each run).

Supervisor at a local car wash (freaking $6/hr )

85 GSL-SE, only RACING first gen in shreveport that I've seen, only three or four that run in Shreveport that are hardly ever seen.

with my 12A SP I use to launch between 6000rpm and 7000rpm and it felt good.

well im racing my stock 85 gs 12A im runing 10.2 sec in the 1/8mile with no air filter, i lauch at 6000 RPM and i shift at 6700 i all ways leave my self just alittle bit of extra power ( i run bracket racing if your wundering) my max speed was 220km/h but the 220km/h is done by craking open the exaust manifold just a little bit, (may air pump is not working so the cats are pluged) and when i was racing i would disconect the whole exaust minifold.

Wait a minute now ! Before you commit to anything, had you rather stay in Shreveport and get a better job or would you rather leave the area and make more money ? Way better than 6.00 is easily had if you have some skills and aptitude. Just keeping a 7 running well enough to do 100 mph regularly put you towards the top of the gene pool more than likely.

Unless, of course you're a coonass and can't speak English... j/k

No,

I wouldn’t rather stay in Shreveport but I cant afford to move to a new city and start job seeking and being a drop out and no GED (I cant take off work, they are idiots...trust me I've tried).

I do know anything and mostly everything about computers (I run a computer hardware & software service on the side) and I'm working my way up to my stance of computers working on cars, my step dad owns a shop down in Baton Rouge that he wants me to take over when I have a little bit more experience under my belt.

I don't care what the job entails (except for cleaning toilets, that I do NOT do) as long as the pay is good, all I care about is getting the bills paid and buying stuff for the RX7!
