I understand what you are saying ,

I rolled the dice.. but the kit in general is pretty good. The braided brake line they picked really isn't the right one. A stock braided line would work better just a matter of adapting it to the Wilwood caliper.

Ah, yes you can cut off as many rings as you like, but they are not true "dead coils" as he asked. Many modern (aftermarket) springs have "dead coils" at one or both ends. The live coils are the ones that actually compress, but so called dead coils are always touching each other. Their purpose is as a " spacer " that you can cut to adjust height without affecting the spring rating at all. The stock SA/FB springs are all live coils, so in theory if you cut any out you affect the spring rating. Below is an illustration of a spring with dead coils, and then a pic of the RB front springs. RB springs don't have dead coils.
*I didn't know any of this until I started shopping for springs for my current '85 GS.

True but that top ring to me is not adding much to the spring equation.

I understand, not trying to argue at all. I just recently learned about spring terminology like live/dead coils, progressive springs, etc., so I wanted to clarify.
Spring-on, brother!

no, and that is exactly what its for. since the "dead coil" is just there to add space, and not spring, you can trim them to change the ride height

Yes,pretty much identical. Mine have WEDS cast into the hub back and a row of numbers on the front. Were you able to find replacement bolts? If so where?
I see the rx3 in your identity....still have it?

And just jump back into the spring question ,it seems to me if theses springs get any shorter they are going to rattle around when unweighted.

I posed the original question and I thank both maxwedge and t_g_ferrel for answering, both from a technical aspect and real world application. I now know what a true dead coil is but my main concern would be can they be cut a little without changing the rate much. The reason I asked is I am getting a set and will try them out of the box first. But if I need to come down say a half inch or so how that would affect things.

Again, thanks to both for taking the time to answer.

Well, you know, when you take those speed bumps at 50mph and get air, it can happen.

Front end all done ,had to wait on the replacement bolts, wheels fit but they're close. Ride height is about the same and as one would expect some what stiffer.
As far as improved braking, holy cow...she stops! Pedal feel is much improved also.
Rear springs are next, I'm mentally wrestling with a rear end swap at the same time as I have access to a gsl rear. May just switch to the LSD and do the springs.
At least until I can reinflate the old bank account.
