Racing Beat Holley kit on a 83 GSL

Hey everyone,

Just got a used Racing Beat Holley kit with 12a intake. I've started to hook everything up and have some questions. I hope someone has experienve and/or pics of a installed unit.

I've already pulled the smog pump, hot start cable/motor, cruise control unit, old carb and intake, and emissions vacuum system. Also got a fitting tapped and installed for the brake booster vac. line.

How is the oil metering system attached?

Which hookup is the fuel intake and which is the fuel return? I assume I need to buy some longer fuel lines...

dumb question: how exactly is the throttle cable and choke cable hooked up?

Anyone have docs, pics, or any help they can give?

many thanks

Do you have the carb with center hung float bowls or side hung? Racing Beat calls the center-hung bowls the "racing" style, and they charge $200 for a pair, which is retarded because you can get a whole carb for a hair more and then scavenge the bowls off of it.

Yes it matters... if it has side-hung bowls (the bowl will be all square and the float adjuster will be off to one side) then there is only one fuel inlet. No return line.

If it has center-hung bowls (bowl isn't all square, float adjuster is in middle of the bowl towards the very end) then both threaded bungs, one per bowl, are inlets, and there is no return line.

You need a pump that can supply 6psi, go get a Carter or Holley fuel pump. You do not run a return line with a Holley.

One thing I see a lot of people doing is getting the Holley fuel pressure regulator with two outlets, and running each outlet with AN style fittings and braided hose to its own carb bowl. Probably overkill, but NHRA and IHRA mandate that there be no more than 12" of rubber fuel hose in the WHOLE fuel system and hardlines are a bitch to deal with when pulling the bowls off so you can get at the jets.

Hey Crafoo, congrats on the purchase, I hear that kit is sweet.

Maybe you could get Racing Beat to fax you the proper instructions?

I'm seriously considering picking one up this winter for install in the spring, and so I would be very interested to hear your thoughts when you get it set up and running. I assume there isn't a whole lot of tuning to be done, since RB has it pretty much tricked out for the 12A from the factory.

Let me know how it performs, and maybe any install tricks you figure out

Peejay: thanks for the reply and useful info. I will get a good fuel pump immediately. I believe my setup is a "racing style" with center-hung bowls. There are two fittings for fuel already installed (it is a used kit). I guess I'll just plug the return fuel line at the firewall. the braided lines and AN fittings are a good idea as well. Thanks.

anyway, I will reply or post a new subject with pictures so you all can see exactly what I am dealing with most of my fuel system experience is with 2nd gen fuel injection soooo...i'm a little lost here.

SilverRocket: yep, I'll post everything I find out. I plan on organizing it all into a web site with scanned photographs as well. hopefully it will be useful. The intake is very nice quality stuff. I was impressed. the carb. looks nice as well. It is extremely simple compared to the factory unit. I wanted to ditch all the emissions stuff and increase airflow capacity. this should work nicely. racing beats web site has been down for a bit, its back up today. I'm going to ask if they can help me out. good suggestion, thanks.

OK, got the intake and carb bolted down, and the oil metering lines hooked up, and the fuel line.

Racing Beat e-mailed me a PDF document (3 pages) detailing the install procedure. No real pics in the doc. It is clear after reading it I am missing a couple pieces.

After closer inspection I do not have the race setup. I've plugged the return fuel line at the firewall.

The car started and idled for a couple seconds. It had been sitting so it blew a big cloud of smoke.

I still need to get the choke and accel. cables attached. Not quite sure exactly how they go on. The docs aren't much help. I have pics and will scan them at work tomorrow.

That's a very nice, clean setup. Is that a custom bracket you have the accel. cable mounted on?

I will probably have to do something similar since I am missing some pieces. I'll make an aluminum bracket for the cables and an attachment for the oil metering system.

Thanks for the pic
