R.i.p rx7

1985-2010 rx7 gslse. My rx7 passed today im so sad. Ive been having over heating problems with the car and today she bought the farm. So what happen was that the car would over heat when stationary but run cool when on the highway. I changed the thermostat and did a coolant flush but she would still over heat. So today i was driving up from my girls house on the sprain park way in New York when i look at my gauges and see the temp needle off the roof. I pull over and check everything out, I see a coolant hose going to the thermowax was broken. I thought easy fix, so right there i cut the hose and put it back on..............the car never started after that. There was antifreeze coming out the exhaust and the cooling system would keep filling up with air, Coolant seal i guess. R.I.P rx7

I just wanted to say Thanks for all the help you guys have given me and i would be no where with out this forum. After a long conversation with my girlfriend who actually cried when she herd what happened, Im going to keep the car try and save money and have her rebuilt, or do it my self. Last thing my girl said was, "the only way ima see that car back alive is with a turbo."............................

Well sorry to hear this. I don't know how you let it get that hot though! We all know that overheating is the #1 killer of our engines!

Sounds like your fan clutch was shot and not pulling any air in.

glad to hear that you plan on fixing the car instead of throwing it away like a lot of people would do.

No fun to lose a motor, but I will double what someone said above, fan clutch. When moving, the air moves through the radiator and keeps it cool. When stopped, the fan wasnt moving enough air through the radiator to keep it cool, thus it would overheat.

Good luck with whatever you do. It took me 7 years to get mine back on the road. There were times when I wondered why I hung onto it, but now that it is, I dont regret keeping it at all.

since it got hot at idle and cooled at speed, sounds like fan clutch failure. they do fail, I've had 3 go bad on me.

Keep it simple and do a taurus fan swap.

Glad to hear you're gonna fix it too! First gen are getting pretty rare in my parts, seems like a get sightings of maybe 2 fresh ones per year now.

Long gone are the $500 specials, they either end up at the wrecker or ask for a ridiculous price.

Tell me about it. I bought more than one back in the early 2000s for under $500, two for $200 each even and they ran and drove.

I also had an over-heating issue not too long ago. New rad, thermos, hoses, gaskets, coolant etc. solved it beautifully. No new fan clutch needed. Could have been all of the above.

thanks guys. I actualy had the electric fan and it was working properly i think the last thing it it would have been was the rad. I actualy talked to a friend and we are gonna actualy rebuild my engine and do a little port to it but idk if i should keep the fuel injection. He wants to put on a holly. We went over the numbers of the turbo 2 swap and it was way to expensive. what do you guys think?
