quick ? about strut dissasembly

got my struts off the car to install coil overs but ran into a snag.

I don't want to sound stupid but, how do you loosen the top nut on the strut. I have 2 shop manuals and all either of them say is " loosen but do not remove top nut" no mention of how. when I turn the nut the piston rod on the shock spins. I have a 19mm socket and an allen the appropriate size. I'm thinking of grinding flats on the socket and using a wrench o it and running the allen down the center and using a cheater bar on it. I'd rather not do it this way.
what is the alternative method?

trying to finish before the week is out
thanks

Edit: my car is a 1985 GSL

you are talking about the top for the springs? you should use a spring compressor and an impact gun

next time shoot a quick photo for reference

the one i had problems with was the nut that holds(something like that) the insert down... had to use a vice and a large monkey wrench...

thunkrd,
Got the spring compressors. its the nut under the domed dust cover.
Thanks Your monkey wrench idea is what I had planned on for the other. (I couldn't find a metric wrench the right size)
thanks

yeah, iirc i just used an impact gun and it took it out instantly. i'd say its nearly impossible without one.

you are trying to remove the springs and insert, right?

I don't really remember my car having the dustcap lol
