Questions about diffs and rear ends in 1st gen.

Ok, I have an '84 rx-7 road race car. I bought the car already built so I am playing catch up on some of the stats. It has rear discs that were added aftermarket. The reason I believe they aren't stock is that there is "83" written on the rear end in yellow crayon. Makes me think the whole rear end came out of a junkyard for the discs. Now...this brings up some questions I have:

1. Does anyone know the stock ratio if it is truely an '83 with discs? (3.90 maybe?)

2. Is there anyway to tell if it is from an '83 or '84? I was told the 84 had different size shafts...

3. If it is an '83...anyone know what is involved in getting a ring and pinion or diff for 4.44?

Thanks!

yes, it's 3.91:1

i believe the driveshaft bolt pattern changed after 1982, so 1983-85 had the same pattern

for the question about how to switch the gears, someone else will have to chime in on that one. i've never done it.

ITs not just aftermarket discs, but probably a whole rear-end swap form a GSL, which had LSD and discs. I hope Im not pointing out the obviuos....... I hate it when I do that.

Yes it's a Miata site. However there is much in common between 1st-gens and Miatas driveline-wise, and he does cover RX-7ness to a degree. It's chock full of good info.
