Questions About Carl/Pratch Tutorial

Hey Guys,

I've read the Emissions Removal Tutorial from Rx7Carl and Pratch so many times that I'm pretty sure I could do most of it by touch with my eyes closed... But I do have a few questions pertaining to my car and situation in particular.

1. The 3L220 belt, which I finally found after going ALL over town to like eight different places, fits... but it fits very loosely... I don't mind, as long as it fits, but with the play that is has, the guys doing the safety might take a fit because I *know* they measure how much play is in the belts. Does anyone else have this problem?

2. I snapped the bolt off my airpump, and a local mechanic suggested that I try just taking the mounting bracket off (so it doesn't look like there SHOULD be one) and trying to safety it like that. He said that with Rx7s they might not know it's supposed to have one. The question I have concerns the ACV. If I took it off and block-plated it, that would be too obvious... Will leaving it on, but removing the air pump create a vacuum leak of some sort? Can I block that off somehow?

3. Will removing the air pump clog the cats very quicky? They don't test emissions here, but you have to have your emissions system intact. I'm trying to sneak the airpump thing by them (unless I can pick up another one CHEAP, which I might be able to), but I have to leave the cats in at least until after the safety. How quickly will having no air pump ***** things over?

I don't know if Carl or Pratch have MSN, but if you guys do, I would love to be able to talk to you guys about it. My MSN e-mail is vipernicus42@hotmail.com (big surprise huh?)

Thanks
Jon

1- Ive done this more than once and the belt wasnt loose. But different mfg's may make their belts slightly differently. sorry, cant be of anymore help.
2- Ok, so the air pump is gonna go, but the acv will stay? I guess get a big vacuum plug and cap the inlet that the pump used to go to. At least it wont looked jury rigged.
3-It wont happen overnight or anything. I drove my car for well over a year that way. But eventually its been stated that they will get clogged.

Is all you need to fix your airpump is to fix that bolt?
I dont have MSN, I have AIM Imrx7carl but Im hardly on. If you want to chat let me know via pm or something and I can sign on.

1 - In that case, what brand of belt do you use? I could only get a Dayco one here... after MUCH searching. Perhaps I'll just send ya the $$ to send me one of the 3L220s that you use. Hell, my car isn't going to the safety until either October or Spring anyway, so I'm not in a HUGE hurry

2 - Big Vacuum Plug Eh?.... Okay, I'll see what I can do. Is that the only point that would really leak?

3 - It's only until Oct or Spring as I stated before. Then Eric and I are gonna ghetto-fab a straightpipe until I can afford an RB Header and Presilencer

And I came up with a few more things!

The elbow on page 12 and the "odd valves with metal hoses" on pg 24... Can those just be left in until I get my straightpipe exhaust w/o any adverse effects?

Check your PMs too.

Thanks SO MUCH for your help, I love this forum!

How hard can it be to get a straight pipe going? Just hit a junkyard, cut off some pieces, buy muff clamps from Pep Boyz, and you're set. Dump all of the exhaust ASAP if emissions is not a concern...

It's not hard to get a straight pipe going... Just go down to Canadian Tire, pick up some exhaust pipe, jbweld and clamps and you're set..

The problem with me is that I need to pass an upcoming safety once all the rest of the work on the car is done. Cats are a necessary part of the safety "challenge".... Taking them out would be an immediate failure of the safety check.

But on the bright side, lack of e-tests in Quebec means that once I've done the safety, I don't ever have to do it again, and I don't have to get e-tested... So I can straight pipe THEN.. but not until then.

Keep in mind, my car's still an unlicenced project car.. At least until October or the spring.

gut the cat.. .it will pass a visual, and it will be MUCH more free flowing. then you won't have to worry about the straight pipe for a while.

BTW: Carl, Pratch thanks SOOO much for that tutorial. I have used it quite a few times now. Great info.

No worries at all

I actually used it myself when gutting the emissions on the 82 I got recently. The pictures saved my *** when I forgot which lines got plugged

So thanks Carl and... uh... me

Unfortunately, my time has been eaten up at school or else we'd have the electric fan, street port and probably the DLIDFIS pictoral augmentation of Jeff20B's write-up done.

So much to do, so little time to do it.

A DLIDFIS pictorial of the same quality as the emissions removal one would be awesome.

Yeah, school gets like that for me as well. If I had a digicam I would have done one about the OMP rebuild, but I actually got along pretty well with the mazspeed write up and brownmound's pictures.

What would be cool is a nikki rebuild tutorial.. of course this would take away from Carl and Sterling's business... but it would still be cool to learn about them.. It'd almost have to be in video form though, kinda like the 13b rebuild video that I wanna buy!
