Question rearend or trans?
My rear end always leaks fluid and i don't know where from because it gets on the drive shaft and the goes everywhere. I typically just refill it once a month.
the other day i was driving down a fairly busy street and my rear end got really really loud so i turned around to head back to my girlfriends apartment and got about a mile away and had to stop at a light and the rear wheels locked for a second then went again when i took it out of gear. The rest of the way home if i was going under ten miles an hour it would continue to do it.
My question is does anyone know anything about this type of problem, should i try to rebuild the rear end? if so how hard is it? and expensive?
Or could it be a trans problem?

There are multiple places that the rearend can leak from . The pinion seal, the drain plug, the sealing surface inbetween the diff and the housing, and the rear axle seals.
If you have damaged the differential extensively then it is more cost effective to buy a used unit and drop it in.

Something similar happened to peejay several years ago. He chronicled it on this forum. He basically did a 100MPH burnout in the rain while the car was only going 50. The poor spider gears had to undure 50MPH more than usual. They didn't live long after that. His car did the momentary lock up too if I remember right.

I had the same thing happen when my diff oil was low. In my case, the bearings went dry, got hot, seized, and then turned freely once they cooled. No idea if they were okay, because I replaced them immediately. Looked a little blued, but probably would have lasted a little while.
