Question on Mech Secondaries

Alright,

Does anyone have a link on how to set this up.

What exactly will this do performance wise, and will it hurt my gas milage?

All help will be greatly appreciated.

Look in the archive section of this board. I have a write up, and so does 82transam.

It will give your foot the control of your secondaries instead of leaving it up to engine load to prompt them to open.

You'll accelerate more quickly when you learn how to use that control. It does not have anything to do with HP potential.
It's just allowing the full potential of the carb be able to gulped by the engine as fast as your toe can push the pedal -
Provided your engine does'nt choke on it. That's what I mean by "learn". You'll be able to choke the engine with too much throttle as well.

I recommend it (if that means anything), and as for gas mileage. It all depends on how you drive. The heavier foot you have the more gas you use.

You have to learn how to drive the car for power, and learn how to drive for economy.
Cruising now means a slightly cracked throttle.
If you drive like a lunatic, you'll love this mod, but your mileage WILL suffer.
If you can drive conservatively, your mileage won't be too terrible, but still worse.

Fuel economy, emissions control systems, and fail-safe tuning are the reasons for vacuum operated secondaries.

If you read the write ups, you'll see that all you have to do is disconnect the vacuum diaphragm linkage (one very tiny cotter pin), and garbage bag twist-tie the shaft linkages together.
If you don't like the odometer math, simply put it back the way it was!
That's why I love telling everyone about this mod. It's very easy to do, and going back to stock is super easy if you don't like it.

Seeing how someone else just asked about the linkage part of the mech secondary mod. I posted some pics of the bread twist tie that I used on the a friends car. I already have mechanical secondaries but not with a nikki carb.

Pics near end of thread:

(btw: I had to unbolt a few things from the carb to get some of those shots for people to see. )

So all you do, is twisty tie those two things together and thats it. Do I have to worry about it snapping or breaking.

By the way thanks for all your help.

the twist-tie?
well.... it hasn't broken yet,
but lets just say i have a few laying around just in case.
im not really worried about it though.
putting the tie on is really easy.

it didnt really seem like anything else was going to break to me.

you do need to uncouple the vacuum deal on the front of the carb. im sure somebody can explain it better

There is a lever attached to the square vacuum box at the front passenger side of the carb. There is a heavy wire arm bent and used as a linkage, It is kept in place with a tiny cotter pin. Simply remove the pin to disconnect it. Now your secondaries don't work at all. Hooking up the tie makes them work with the throttle cable.
If you don't remove the vacuum, you won't have as quick response. I dunno- you might even bend linkage if you stomp it too hard. Probably just stretch the twist tie.

It would, but a good piece of wire is much better.
