Question about SE Tidbits

I'm going through my interior with the help of an SE donor car and want to get every little thing working. I remember being told that the ignition illumination light worked on SE's - I have one with a new bulb but it still doesn't work. I also never have a headlight chime or door chime go off. Where are these located, and under what conditions does the ignition light come on? Just trying to track it down.

First, clean the contacts on the door switches. They're located on the bottom inside door jamb. Use some sandpaper and electrical cleaner.
That's what fixed mine.

The headlight chime is also the low oil level chime, which is located right behind the speedometer on my 82'.
I'm not sure where the door chime is, but i think it's near the fuse block.

My dome light works, and I've removed and cleaned the contacts recently. Any idea where the chime is physically located?

The circuit to the doors is common to both the chime and dome light. My dome light works and comes on with the doors, so I figure it's the wiring or chime itself. Where is the chime located? Has anyone seen it? I doubt it's on the instrument cluster b/c I have a new one and the chime didn't come back. The contacts aren't dirty. Anyone know where it's at?

i think i have you all beat when it comes to light/chime problems!

My key light is on all the time, my dome light only comes on when the driver side door is open, my headlight chime only "dings" once when i open my door with the lights on and once when i shut off the lights, and my oil/ coolant chime rings constantly when the low oil or low coolant light is on.

Lol , when the low coolent/oil light, lites,do you add oil/coolent ???and it goes out ??? it's working perfect !.
sometimes the dome light/switch just dies,, try another
one. And sometimes the wiring overhead for the dome light gets pinched. test the wiring with a meter and see what you get, track down the problem.

So where's the actual chime. I don't think it really exists. Nobody's ever seen it.

On 84/85, pull the gauge cluster and flip it over. The chime is on the left between the circuit board and the white cluster housing. The over-rev buzzer is on the right of the cluster. The door buzzer is in the CPU up behind the fuse box.

Damn. I swapped instrument cluster boards and it didn't come back, so I'm thinking I have a wiring problem. My dome light works, so I have no idea where it would be. Thanks GS.

Ya my dome light does not come on when the doors open I can turn it on with the switch. it must be a wiring
problem. when I switch it to the door setting it comes on even if the doors are closed. also no chime and no
neutral start switch. I would like to get this stuff working. but I have been busy fixing so many other things on this car that I just have not got around to
looking into these problems yet, could it be a fuse?
all my dash lights and things work. but I have never seen the key light come on. oh well just add it to the
list of things to fix!!

I can tell you it's not the fuse nor the fusible links, I've already tried that. Same problem here though: driver's side door does not trigger dome light nor the key light in the door, only the ighition switch light works. passenger side everything works though. And no it is not the door switch, I think I've cleaned it and tested it 100 times. I'm pretty sure we've all got the same problem till someone finds the solution.

Well guess what I just went out and and removed the
dome light and rear view mirror assembly and voila
the door lights and ignition light are now working!
as soon as it was hanging by the wires it started working. I ckecked the wires for bare spots did not
see any thing so I just tucked them back in and put
it back on and they work fine now! Still no warning buzzers someone must have dissconnected them

Bingo! found my problem! Turns out those darn door switches weren't the problem, it's the two screws that ground the switch to the cars chassis. While fiddling with the wires it started to work, now everything works great. Lesson learned: DO NOT OVERLOOK YOUR DOOR SWITCHES! Make sure your screw holes are clean and rust free, maybe that will cure your dome light.

By the way the ignition key light is triggered by a switch underneath the door handle

The ignition light has its own switch? Is it in the door or in the door jamb? I'm sure it's my problem, but I figured it was on the same circuit as the other stuff. Where exactly is the switch for the ignition? Thanks man.

I just went out and checked mine when I pull the door
handle it comes on, so ya it must be on the door handle
My door was locked so it must be seperate from door jam dome light switch.

The ignition key light (the one on the steering column) is triggered by a switch on the door handle, which means you have to remove your door panel to have access. If you lock your door and pull SLOWLY on the handle you can hear it click (if it works). I think the light inside the lock on the door is triggered by the same switch, but mine isn't working so I'm not sure (I replaced the bulb and it still doesn't work, think I'll just leave it like that)

Thanks French RX7, I took out the mirror and noticed one of the connections disconnected...i hooked it up and on came the light! Then I started pushing the door button and noticed it would only turn on sometimes, i took out the switch, cleaned it up and now the light works flawless
My side marker lights weren't working, when i went in there i noticed they were disconnected, i connected them and they came on as well. looks like when someone took out the rear lights they disconnected the marker lights as well and never connected them back up. now to find out why my hatch light doesn't work...once that one is done my electrical problems are complete
