putting in a new radio

So I am thinking about putting in a new stereo i went to car toys and another store and they said that the only thing they have is a "pocket" no install kit.. Does this sound right? Another thing is that they said I would have to hard wire the radio into the car that they dont make a wiring harness at all but I looked around online and found

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1207050...s.html?tp=2977

Would this work for the car. The sit says it does but with everyone telling me that they dont make a harness i dont wanna buy it and for it not to work..

Thanks

You need a pigtail to match the new radio. If the link is a pigtail to tie into the oem power harness for the radio, then you should be good. Since you're upgrading the radio, you may wish to install all new speakers and speaker wire, bypassing the old system entirely.

Just hardwire the radio in and run fresh wire to the speakers.

Yes the crutchfield kit will work for you, I used it on mine. By pigtail he means the wiring harness that plugs into the back of the radio, and then the kit crutchfield supplies contains a few harnesses that splices to that, and then plugs into your factory wiring. It's worth getting even if you don't use all of the plugs in the kit, (i.e. ditch the speaker harnesses if you're running new speaker wires) to plug into the stock power harness. You may also find yourself having to cut into the plastic of the dash to mount a new radio. They used to make steel frame kits that would somewhat work in the 84-85 dash, are those around anymore?

I have a 2 din radio and 1 din pocket coming to put in my 82. I'll post up some pictures of the install when I get them. I"m waiting on them to get here before I do any cutting. I plan to put the radio right under the heater controlls and then the pocket under that. I will be eliminating the ash tray and moving the acessory plug to the passenger side of the center console.

Yeah bro but the 84-85 dash is a little different. On my 83 I used a single din size and kept everything else as is, but I did have to cut a little of the plastic to make it fit.

on the 84-85 if its a single din it will fit basically wire everything up ( I bypassed the old wiring and reran some new speaker wire and a new antenna ) then you need to just push it in and let it lock

make sure since its really brittle old plastic that when you slide it in you know its where you want it because if you take it out wrong it will crack... found that out

but it shouldn't be that bad I have a gauge setup right under mine so it could be supported by that but i doubt it would be any different that the pocket you were talking about?

I ran into that same problem so what i did was i skipped the radio completely and installed one of these. I also Installed a new amp and a direct headset jack to the amp so i can attach my phone, That has my music and a built in radio.

Can you give some details on the model and perhaps a couple pictures of it working?

Honestly i don't know the model its just some random car monitor some guy gave me. I really didn't think nothing of it until i saw how nicely it fit. I went out bought my self a under the seat car dvd player and wired everything up, not to hard really. I put the dvd player in the passenger side bin and wired the audio to the amp i had already installed. Then i wired one video cable to the monitor. The monitors power is wired into one of the stock radio cables. Its really nice quality for being free. Ill take a pic in the morning of it working and post it up.
