Putting backseats in an FB

How is this done? i read the thread about them replacing the storage bins, but how do they replace the storage bins? do the bins have to be cut out or what?

Nope! Just unscrew the bins and take out the whole metal frame under the carpet. The seats slide right in.

It's only on the SA model that you have to modify the car to make the back seats fit. They were orginally deleted from North American RX-7's because they required additional crash bracing behind the front seats. With the redesign of the bumpers in '81, the crash bracing was removed, and storage bins put in place of the seats.

There is a picture of my backseat at the web link in my signature.

Basically the seat fit right it--but I don't think it is OEM. Two bolts on the seat cross member bolt right to the floor cross member (the one the cruise module is attached to). And there is a bolt hole in the rear fender well that normally has a rubber plug in it--the seat bracket bolts to it (and believe it or not that is probably the only ENGLISH threads on the car. I think they are really for the seat belts but I made a custom bracket to mount the seat in there.

Just so you know, Matt, that's true of US cars (so the Americans say) but not of Canadian spec RX-7s. Canada maintained the 5MPH bumper standards while the US changed to 2.5MPH bumpers.

From the rear seat pictures I have seen, it looks like you free up some more storage room with them, instead of the storage bins.

I'd like to get some in mine.....

I already know they're rare as hell around here....and finding them in Gray cloth, will only make my search harder.

Oh well. I guess I'll bolt in whatever I can find.

i know a guy who has a backseat here in eugene. i bet i could get him to let go of it, if there is any interest. i don't really think he knows how rare it is. i would take it off of his hands, but don't really want one in my car.

The factory rear seats pivot at the bottom around two brackets that bolt to the bodywork. The top of of the seat is restrained at the top near the shock mountings and the seat squab is seperate and clips into the chassis rail at the front and under the seat back at the back. ... see photo

The camaro seats definately didn't work. Because they're rare as hell, i might try mx-6 backseats because i now know they're bench style. I've got a friend with an mx-6 so i may talk him into letting me try this, if it works, i will post the results.

mx6 seats will not work. they are the wrong design. you will need something with a deeper and shorter bottom design. you will need something out of a hatch or lift back. some that I have heard could be made to work are older toyota hatch back seats, 2nd gen seats, late model impulse seats, if you find something of this type of design you can probly make it work. but why ? from what I under stand you can get them ( the 1st gen stock ones) from overseas very easy. there are several people on this board over there that could help you find them. I have a 79 that I put the pacific rear seat in. I got it off ebay. they have averaged a first gen rx7 rear seat for sale almost 2 per month in the last 8-9 months prices have been between 50 -150 I paided 75 for mine shipped. the stock 1st gen seats provide more room than the aftermarket ones do.

I figured they'd cost over $200 for stock seats, I'll just look into stock seats in that case. Thanks alot.

More room, in some cases i need to transport more than 1 other person around. I might leave the backseats out, i layed back there earlier and it was actually quite comfortable, the carpeting just doesn't line up and has the storage bin holes.

I put 240sx back seats in my 79 after I cut out the bracing... the 79/80 bumpers are better protecting imo....

fwiw

The 240sx (89-93 i htink) fit NICELY! they are cut just the same as if they were copying the first gen style!!! Cause you know where the wheel arche is..... thats cut the same.... just you gotta make your own mounting brackets or get the ones out of a 240sx, along with the seat belts....... and then mount everything....... your gonna have to mold your own side plates...... but that shouldnt be hard.... if I get another rx7 that I thought the effort for back seats was worth it, then I will install them in there and take pics...... i dunno.....

Thanks, Laterz, Andrew

its not worth all the effort of putting backseats into first gens, no one not even small kids can fit back there. the only good thing about it is it will put a barrier between you and the crap in the back of your car. I have a backseat I got it out of a 83 gsl, its red and not in the best condition but I still got one, I sat in it when it was in the car and theres no way i would ever let some one sit in one if the car was moving. The back seats in my 2nd gen is tight enough. and then I only allow some one to sit back there if thay are HOT. lates matt22

A cargo net is lighter and works just as well if not better.

I beg to differ. My mom had a backseat intalled in her 84 GSL when I was about 7 or 8, I and I fit in there okay, right up until she sold the car when I was 12.

I have the backseats in my 85.

They are grey cloth and in near perfect condition...

Anyone know the weight of the backseats? I suppose I could just pull it out and weigh it myself....
