HI,
I bought two RX7, 6 month ago, one 1981 with a running 12A, and a 1985 wiht a dead 12a. My project is to take th engine from the 1981 with transmission attach with it and put it in the 1985. If anyone any suggestion, comment or experience to share on this to help thanks a lots.
I check that the 12A 1981 does not got a oil cooler, and the 1985 got one. what appening if I put the 12A 1981 whitout the oil cooler in the 1985, is their any problem running a 12A whitout an oil cooler in a 1985.
If you want to see my project go to http://homepage.mac.com/ve2cvx

The 81 engine should go right in with little trouble. 81's have teh good kind of oil cooler, its under the radiator, use that one, and ditch the 85 style one, the 81 kind is much better.
The 81 does have an oil cooler. Its under the radiator. There are two lines that go to it from the engine. Use the radiator and oil cooler from the 81 when you put he engine in the 85. You will have to read about how to swap the coolers over, but its worth it. I am personally putting an oil cooler from a 79 in my 83 with the oil cooler like your 85. The ones from 83-85 on the non -SE cars are garbage. They dont work as well, and they are VERY prone to leaking.

Why I bought 2 RX&, the 1981 got a good motor but there is a big job to do on the floor, a losta rust that I can move up and down the driver seat for 3 inches. The 1985 got a better floor, some body work but in good shape, but the motor stop working when he reach 165 000km. The old owner tell me that is not time to change the APEX on each rotor. SO I'm not ready to open the motor now, so I will swap the 1981 in to the 1985. This way I got plenty of parts for the futur. Even I got 2 PP housing to sold, this kind of project is to expensive for me. I don't to pass any approuval to put it on the road because both car still a valid plate on it. So here in Quebec Canada that's mean the car are still running on the road are not suppose to pass any emission test.
