Pround owner of a 1985 rx7 gs
I just bought a 1985 rx7 gs 5 speed in great condition, 121,000 miles and it costed me $900. I don't really know anything about rotaries at all. Any tips on some things I should do to the car first to make sure she keeps running good. Also any idea on how to get a cd player in there to replace the stock radio?

Welcome. Best bet is to check out the FAQ at the top of page, and then if you have more questions feel free to ask. A normal DIN sized deck should fit just fine. May want to buy an install kit and the harness though. Not sure about specifics, I have an 83 (somewhat different interior).
Congrats and good luck.

Autozone claimed they did not have this kit in stock, but as previously mentioned, the dash is different between 83 and 85.
As for the fuel mileage question, I have been getting a little over 20MPG, and it could use a tuneup. It had been sitting for a year in an impound lot when I bought it, and I haven't changed the plugs yet. I have only had it tagged about 2.5 weeks, but have driven it over 600 miles, averaging 20.5 - 20.9MPG thus far.

Damn that sucks I thought it would have some more beef than that but yeah it didn't seem like it had a ton of get up and go when I drove it. Any easy mods to get those numbers up at all? Also what do you mean by they claimed they did not have it in stock? Do they actually or what?

Look here for HP/Torque, EPA estimated MPG (and such) figures for your car.
As for the install kit for the stereo, they just told me they didn't have it, so I left. I didn't ask how long it would take to get in, or what years it covered. I didn't really need it anyways.

Thanks for that site. I searched on google for ever and couldn't find any information at all really. I think I am just going to have to go with crutchfield then and order the kit. Does anyone know which items I need to buy to make sure I can install my xplod cd player?

Change the spark plugs, fuel filter, oil filter and oil. After that change oil every 5,000 miles or more frequently if you do it yourself.
There are a range of modifications possible up to $5000 if you search the forum. However, all modifications put a stress on 20 year old parts so be careful otherwise you can end up with a very high repair bill.

congrats. i bought my first rx7 last year too. peer pressure really. 85 gs 144k mile. 2 of my friends have fc's and i found an fb for $500. i wasn't sure about getting it, but they were all like "yea, if i were u, id get it." so then i bought it with dirty messed up interior, and decent exterior. o yea, and the brakes didn't work... i still drove it home. then turns out the car wasn't registerd since 2000. so i had to pay extra 300 for registration. but in the end its a great car to drive around. Cheers mate.

that registration stuff sounds like crap...if it wasn't driven, it wasn't driven...WTF?? and I thought MI auto laws were messed up...we have no-fault insurance!!
congrats on the purchase(s) to everyone.
my car came with a dashkit, but they are pretty standard...some are better than others...I like "Scoshe," they are sold at Miejer...Yea. I know what your thinking..." this idiot wants me to buy car audio stuff at Miejer?!"...Thats what I thought when my buddy told me the same thing, now its the only place I go for dash kits and wiring harnesses.
what you need for your car is two things. One, is a dashkit, which will make your aftermarket DIN radio fit the huge hole in your dash. Two, is a wiring harness, which will be used to make the aftermarket radio harness fit your vehicles stock harness.
The dashkit will be pretty generic, but if its a Scosche, (and maybe if its not) it will come with parts to mount perfectly in your vehicle and instructions for how to do it.
The harness will plug into your vehicles stock plug and has wires that will be spliced, crimped, soldered or otherwise connected to the wires that plug into your aftermarket radio.
now there is a way to do it, and a way to do it right and they both work...for a while...
I highly reccommend that if you havn't done this before you find someone in your area who has...however, if you are pretty handy and you have the tools, you may proceed at your own risk...thats how I learned...In 4 years I've only blown one sub and one amp LOL I overpowered a sub and it took half the amp with it...moral of the story: not all 15's were created equal!!
I hope this helps! Good luck
