Either way, I think it looks cool. Worst case if it makes cooling worse, you could just cap the bottoms so theyre just "for looks". As much as that would suck to do, at least theres a way to easily "fix" it.

yes, yes and no. The venturi effect relies on the fact that the fast moving air is lower pressure then the, for example, fuel in the flat bowl. It's the fast moving low pressure aire that draws the fuel out of the higher pressure float bowl. And correction those aren't stock mirrors, but also Anniversary racing mirrors.

I can see that, but what about a paint spray gun? The fast moving (higher pressure) air is moving across the top of the pickup tube, and the venturi effect is what draws the paint up the tube from lower pressure paint cup.

The faster moving air is lower pressure than the pressure in the can.

After the choke the air is moving faster through the tube and therefore lower pressure. You can see the pressure differences working against the incompressible fluid in the tube below.
As air speeds up the pressure drops like on a wing.

OK -- I've found the hood I want. It's on a Ferrari 412. It has the cross-hood louvers I want, and it's even the right color. If I can just figure out how to make mine look like it. I'd prefer to keep my hood steel. Suggestions?

make a metal frame ie square out of flat bar stock 3/16 thick 1.25 wide. stitch weld it to the under side of you hood then cut out the center this will keep the hood from warping.

Can't believe it's been almost 2 years since this thread was last commented on! I was waiting for DS to do his hood, but I gave up and did it without benefiting from his experiment

What I wanted was vents in the center of the hood, but couldn't figure out a good way to do it that didn't involve a ton of welding (I don't weld very well). So I decided to go fiberglass. I got a hood from Fibremaz and some louvers from Tiger Racing. I married the two, and achieved what I wanted. I put some SS screen behind the large center vent, and I think it'll flow a good amount of air.

My primary goal was to move more air through the radiator to cool my turbo engine during track days. I haven't had an overheating problem yet, but I want to take every precaution because motors are expensive.

The nice thing is that the Fibremaz hood has all the original hardware, so this thing latches just like the OEM hood. I removed the rubber seal at the rear of the hood, and now it doesn't flutter at all.

It's in primer right now. Should I paint it Black or Red?

Yeah, well... the project went on hold when my car got wrecked, but yeah the hood is still on my new frame in its half finished, rusted glory.

I like how yours came out! I lack the fiberglass skill to make it like you did so I have to use my recently learned TiG welding skills, that is when my car is running again. Sorry to leave you hanging... was sure I posted a comment that this project got put on hold because of my old RX7 getting wrecked.

looks good. i've been thinking about different ways to vent my hood lately and still keep all the rain out (or at least keep the rain away from anything important)

My car is what my dad calls a "sunshine car". It doesn't see much rain anymore. If your car's a daily driver, water management is important.

Hey, that sucks -- I know how it feels, since I just stuffed my daily driver a few weeks ago (Dodge Neon). Not nearly as bad as yours, but it still made me mad for a few days. It still drives fine, but the insurance company just totalled it, so I'll be looking for a new ride

I live in MI, so I'm 2000 miles away. If you're interested in a fiberglass hood, contact Fibremaz. His stuff is top notch. The shipping from Australia is expensive, but his prices are fairly low. If you decide to go that route and want to modify it, I'll walk you though it step-by-step.
