Project Keiko - Thanksgiving Update and New Owner!
Hey Everyone,
This will be a quick update, since it's Thanksgiving long weekend and we've got family dinner in about an hour. I hope everyone has a good Turkey Day!
Anyway, a few weeks ago I sold Project Keiko to a guy named Nicolas. He's a cool, hardworking kid who hand-chopped 17 cords of wood to get money for the project! Today I went down to see how things are going and give him a hand with an idling problem he had.
Yup, you heard right, "idling problem" means he got the motor running! When he was here at my place deciding whether or not to buy the car, we installed the new starter and did some tweaking on it. It got dark before we got it running, but he bought the project anyway and took it home. Since then he got it started more than a few times, but could never really get it to idle.
So I went over today, and suspecting it was a carb problem we started with swapping carbs between his car and mine. As soon as my Sterling was on the project car she started and ran beautifully! We used my new TR-01 rotary compression tester on both cars. My car runs 7.2kg/cm2 (102psi) on the Mazda tester, but the TR-01 seems to consistently give lower numbers. Since we knew that my compression was "good" we used it as the baseline. I ran about 85-90psi on all faces of all rotors at 300rpm on the TR-01, his ran about 80-85psi on all faces of all rotors at 230rpm. So the good news is that the engine has nice even compression across all rotor faces, no more than 2-3psi varience between any of them. The numbers are about the same as mine if you take the cranking speed into account, maybe even a bit better, and I'm putting down 105rwhp and running very solid so we considered his compression to be equally as "good" as mine. It was a relief to everyone that his engine won't need to be swapped (again).
He also dove right into the rust work. All of the work where we thought the rust was at its worst is already done. He found more under the carpet on the driver's side by the footpad, but that won't take him long to do. He's got a roll of brake line and the tools to cut and flare it so he'll have the rear brakes connected soon, and he bought a clutch master and slave cyl (slave's installed, master comes in this week) so he'll hopefully be able to drive it around his yard in short order. He's aiming to safety it by Spring and at this rate I have no doubt that he'll do it!
All in all, everybody's happy. He got Keiko at a killer deal (I parted with it for $400) and I'm happy to see that someone else has picked up the torch and plans to finish the project. He already admits to sacrificing sleep to work on the car or surf the forum looking for info and answers Now he just needs a carb (I told him to get a Sterling, but until he saves up the money for that...), and to iron out a few kinks here and there and he'll be underway!
I've got a few pics from when he picked it up, but the camera was dead today so I didn't get many of the car today. I'll add the pics that I've got after recovering from tonight's Turkey dinner (ie: tomorrow or early this week).
Have a good Turkey-Day guys!
