Does anybody know if theres any rotary racing shops out there that make a auto to manual tranny mount adapter for the 84-85 RX-7?

As far as I know one doesnt exist, but time and time again, rotary products that I didnt think existed are made by rotary shops I've never heard of... in damn good quality I might add.

My mount works but I want something sturdier, and I dont think I have the skills to fab up exactly what I want. So does anybody know of a shop that makes this or is even looking into it? I figure its worth a shot.

 

The bodyshells are the same, so you *could* just bolt in a manual tranny crossmember.

 

No they are not. The later autos are different from what Ive read. Maybe the earlier ones too. Weird that they would make it that way, doesnt seem to make economic sense, but thats what I understand to be the case.

Well anyway, my '85 has two sets of crossmember mounting points, as did my '80. I would imagine that the extra set of mounting points is for the automatic, given that that was the only other driveline option. (Yes there was the GSL-SE and/or Turbo versions available for '85 but those used the same manual trans as the lowly 12A carb models)

 

The "professional" way to do this would be to cut the mounts off a five-speed and weld them onto your car.

 

I've seen what your talking about but in the 84 and 85 the auto mounts are about 4 inches father back than the manual ones. I've seen auto to manual adapters for second gens, someone has got to have made on for a first gen. That way when I break it I can have someone else to blame.

The reason why this was doen carl, was the overdrive auto tranny was a bit longer than the manual one.

Anyway, again if anybody knows anybody who makes them, or hell if any shop would be willing to MAKE one. Pass the info along.

 

horn, if you remove all the rubber parts from where your brackets attach to the holes on the frame and use big, solid washers and lock washers, it'll be a lot firmer and you won't have to worry about it popping off.

If you're really worried, make new ones that are extra 3-4" long in the front, and run some rods into the floorpan.

 

I may just do that. I just gotta find some time I can have some downtime for my car to do it.

If anybody would make a bolt in deal, Id pay the extra dough for it that way I coud just slap it in over a weekend.

 

hmm i would atempt to make one , but the problem is you need to find an automatic(84-85)then remove the tranny then install a 5 speed, then make the mount.....not an easy task....im sure it will come up at the shop, but until i get a auto swap.......

 

yeah rob its exactly what I did. I'm just worried when I start throwing boost beind my shitty mount theres no way in hell it'll hold up. I allready broke it without boost. And im not to easy on that tranny either.

Couldn't you just grab a mount off of a manual tranny rx7 at the junk yard? Why would you need a custom job?

 

yeah the bolt came out, OR it snapped. Im not sure exactly what happened. If someone wants to go find the remains of it on I-5 be my guest. lol.

You cant just grab a mount for the 84-85s because the floor pan welded mounts are in different spots.

If I dont think of something good, I might just buy a GSL-SE and swap everything over and call it good.

 

hmm, good to know as I'm going to look at an auto rx7 for sale tomorrow.
