Unhappy Problems with my 84 GSL-SE

I recently, like 3 weeks ago, bought a 84 GSL-SE. I knew it was going to take work to get it fixed, Just yesterday I had the addle arm and pittman arm replaced. But that is nto the problem. The problem is that the engine keeps sputtering. We called the guy that used to work on the car, and he told me a few things. SO I replaced some wires, and put on a new Rotar a Displacment cap, hoping it help, but it has not yet. I not sure if it is becuase the guy I got it from, had it gto 3 years, and almost never drove it or what. Any help would be good.

Have you done the usual new-to-me car stuff like

1. Change the oils (engine & tranny)

2. Change the filters (oil, fuel, air)

3. Flush (not drain) and fill the coolant in rad & engine

4. Tune Up (sparkplugs, etc.)

never know, sometimes something as simple as a bad air filter could throw it out of whack. As it's a used car there's no harm but mountains of possible good from the simple TLC items above.

I have Changed the Engine Oil, not the tranny, I will try that later, I got plenty of time. Changed the Oil Filter, I have a Fuel Filter, but I do not know where it goes, I can't find it, and the Air Filter is in great shape. I have not fluhed yet, I will have to try that. Sparkplugs are great, and I had jsut changed the Sparkplug wires. If you get any other ideas, please tell.

The fuel filter, if its the "can" type with two ports pointing in opposite directions on the top of the filter, goes just in front of your rear axle near the left side of the car.

Also, if the car hasn't been driven, sometimes the flapper door on the AFM can get sticky. check it by opening up the air box and making sure the flapper moves freely

The GSL-SE fuel filter is just in front of the rear axle, right behind the fuel pump (which is in that steel case thing, which is likely either black or rusted). Pretty easy to swap out, just a little cramped.

When I bought my GSL-SE earlier this year the car had been sitting in a garage for a couple of years without being started. It wouldn't run at first. Pulled it down the street to get it started. When it did it ran like crap and had no power. Had to drain the gas and replace it. Changed the plugs and checked everything else including the timing. No problems. The injectors turned out to be very dirty from the old gas. Ran some injector cleaner and drove it for a while and it kept getting better and better. After a few days it ran great. My exhaust wasn't clogged or bad either. It passed Texas emissions a week later with no readjustments to anything.

I have already put in fuel adatives, and it didn't help, but right now I am without the car, since my bro took it to a store. But with all these ideas, I should get it runnign great. Thanks guys, and if you get any other ideas, please tell, I am in my learning stage I would say.

Also, quick question, on teh Feul Filter, what can I do to stop the gas from coming out, since I would think it would act like a Oil Filter, right. Is there like a way to stop it then?

If your talking about the hose that goes to the filter, just get some vice grips and pinch it and stick a bolt or something in it to plug the hose. As for the filter, your gonna get some gas spilling out of it no matter what you do. Try catching it in a bucket or shallow pan or something.

Yeah, if you ignite a small flame down there, it'll dry the gas right up and you'll have no problem

PLEASE DON'T DO THIS!!!!

Seriously, you're going to spill a little when you change the filter. Just anticipate it by having some towels around, clamps on the lines, and some clean bolts to shove in there. It helps if you jack the car up a decent amount (use a jackstand please) so that you have plenty of room to work. This way, when fuel starts coming out, you can get out of there before it hits your eye (something that is better to avoid).

Just be careful and be smart. It's easy but it's tricky to do a clean job.

Yeah, I safe. But last night when I looked udner, I fount the area it goes, and it is all really rust, which sucks. Hope I not break it. And Redwood, you avatar, that RX-7 has the saem fog Lights that are on my GSL-SE, but there are broken. By any chance you know of a place I cna order new parts for them?

I found out what was the real problem. I took the car over to a Mazda dealership, and they checked it, and the ECU was fried. I found a new one to, which is good. Comes on Tuesday.
