So I know that the spare tire wheel well is different between 79-80 and 81-85, and I have a 79 and I have a pending buy of a gas tank from a 12a off of 81-85. now I know that 81-85 doesn't have a breather valve, and that's all well because the previous owner took off the vapor tank. so what it ***** down to is if i put it on the car will it clear my spare tire well and still fit without much problem.

anyone ever try this, and how did it work out?

 

Not going to really work unless you cut/modify the spare tire well. The FB tank is bigger. Basically they gave up the full-sized spare and got a bigger tank instead.

have you considered repairing your current tank? you can send it out to be cleaned and sealed...

 

the tank I have isn't complete, it doesn't have a sending unit and the breather valve isn't the one that belongs on the tank and it has 6 rivets in it and rvt everywhere to seal the gaps. and for the record I didn't do it.
