power loss... Ignition or fuel?

Hey guys, here's whats up...
I've been having a problem with my mostly stock 79 (no rats nest, straight piped exaust, RB power pulse filter) just driving around town its great, plenty of go, nice idle, ect... but if i run the car up through the gears hard it stutters and just kinda loses steam about the time i hit 3rd. Feels like im hitting a rev limiter almost, itll keep its current speed but wont accelerate, if i push the clutch in and let it idle for a few seconds, then go its fine to run up through 3rd and then it does it again about halfway through 4th.

I'm kinda thinking my fuel pump is on its way out, and the car runs out of fuel, then when i let it idle it catches up, and then does it again... What do you guys think? any other ideas? How do i go about testing if my fuel pump is moving enough volume?

Oh, and its recently had a tune up, (oil, filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter) Its got the original coils from 79.. dont know how long they should last..

I would have to agree with you on the fuel pump. The only other thing that I can think of, is if the carb floats are too low. This will give the same problem. Look at the sight glass on the front and back of the carb while it is running. The fuel level should be to the top mark. That may still be fuel pump related.

Check your fuel filter again.

Sounds like fuel restriction or lack of flow to me as well.

Make sure that all the lines going to and from the fuel pump are straight and unkinked. I had a hell of a time tracking down a fuel starvation issue until I looked very closely at the outlet line on the pump and realized that it was kinked on the inside of the bend, where it was hidden from view unless you took it right off and looked at it.

If the line isn't kinked and the fuel filter is good, do a volume test. If that fails then your pump is on the way out. The FSM specifies that the pump must output at least 1100 cc of fuel in a 60 second interval.

Good luck!

Looking in the window, the fuel against the glass will be flat in the middle, and curl up on either end to meet the edge of the window assembly; the edge of the curl should be right in the middle of the sight glass, with the flat portion of the fuel approximately 1/16" below center.

But in any case, most likely it's not the floats if they have not been messed with. Most likely it's fuel filter or pump or both.

Any generic aftermarket electric pump in the 4 PSI range will work. They're cheap at your local parts store.

Start your research here if you want to upgrade, which is probably cheaper than trying to find a stock replacement. You'll need this setup anyway if you mod at all... https://www.rx7club.com//showthread.php?t=529605
