power loss

85 gs 12a carb engine. changed plugs on sunday with same as what was in it. going to work today it was really low on power and got worse the more I drove, now will not rev over 4k and is running really hot and requires almost full throttle to get to freeway speed. any thoughts. I am a mechanic fust have not dealt with rotarys since my pick up that had delarto side draft and header only, no emmissions.

I am certainly no expert, but it sounds like bad news to me. Any sort of overheating if not caught immediately on a rotary can do some damage. I don't have any experience with what you are describing, but I would be very very careful with it until you have it figured out. Good luck

You just changed the spark plugs, then started having issues. I would be willing to bet that you have routed the plug wires incorrectly, or bumped some connection loose in the process.

Running hot would lead me to believe that (as a result of whatever happened), your timing is now highly retarded. This will cause the ignition to light the fuel mixter too late in the process, shooting the majority of the flame (and power) into the exhaust system.

ok,
correct spark plugs, timing is correct plugs wires are installed correctly. compression test shows 95 psi front rotor 100 psi rear rotor. spark test shows good front and rear leading and trailing. I am thinking th cat or muffler is plugged. The lack of performance happened over a 30 plus mile trip and got worse. anyone ever have this happen? My other thought was the pre chamber melted down plugging the exhaust ports. never got a exhaust over heat warning light, but that does not mean anything to me. gonna rod out the cat tomorrow morning and see what happens. will keep all informed.

I would not advise running the **** out of it until she blows up. I did the same thing and haven't been able to drive my car since the end of August. I miss my car, and am now saving for a rebuild. Besides, if you blow it up, chances are you'll be spending more money on buying replacement housings and rotors. Rebuild it now while the parts are still good.

And, thank you for wasting rare parts from a limited remaining supply just so you can prove that things can be broken when abused.

Yeah good 12a rotor housings are getting pretty rare, actually. They quit making them, unfortunately. Most of us are gonna have to switch to 13b motors eventually, or baby the 12a's to keep em going. So the 12a will become one of those rare lost works of art that the 12a fans will need to search hard to find.

Plus you are in the 1st gen section where 90% of us have and love 12a's. So don't act so surprised that you are getting grief from the members here when you talk about beating one into the ground. You were kinda asking for it.

Oh and welcome to the forum.

Not even babelfish could translate that for me.

Look, you're free to do what you want with your property. It's a free country.

But if you come on an enthusiast website and start making proud noises about pointlessly and destructively abusing the very cars we here are all interested in keeping running, expect to hear opposing viewpoints.

Because its a free country for us, too.

The freedom to act foolishly does not include freedom from criticism for acting foolishly.
