Thumbs up Power Foam, the stuff works!

Well, I know Wankelguy will be pleased to hear that I did the Amsoil Power Foam treatment to my engine today. If the carb is any indication as to what this stuff does to the engine internals then I'll be happy. The carb is amazingly clean now. All the varnish inside is gone and she looks almost brand new inside. I sprayed the entire can down the carb while reving the engine to keep 'er running. The exhaust was pretty stinky but produced with very little smoke while I did this. The resulting "butt/dyno" isn't earth shattering but the throttle on / throttle off response is smoother now. Try it.... maybe you'll like it. BTW, the stuff is cheap, it costs less than 5 bucks a can.

Did you get the stuff from a shop, or have to order it?
Is it really something more than carb cleaner?
Carl & I know some old men that adamantly endorse this product. (BL & GH)

try their gasoline additive for and inside out clean northern 7. http://www.amsoil.com/products/api.html check out any of their gear lubes or their slip-lock differential additive for all those LSD's out there.

I'm lucky to have a Napa store near me that sells Amsoil products. They didn't have Power Foam in stock but ordered up a case when I requested it. I like this store because they carry, Amsoil, POR-15, Lucas products and other cool stuff.

That's what they say! I'm not sure if it's true or not but I read somewhere that Power Foam is what Mazda recommends to it's mechanics to un-carbon lock rotaries. I would imagine that Power Foam would be similar to using water to decarbonize an engine.

I'm not sure if it removed any carbon from my engine but as far as I'm concerned this is gonna be a once-per-year preventative maintenance proceedure from now on for me.

Inittab, what the hell did that fer-**** thread have to do with this?! (That thread is a perfect example of wasted space that makes this site such a PITA for users!)

-But really, why do you liken the Foam to water cleaning? It's a petrol-product, no?
...Does it actually foam up?

hmmm, well I guess we're all entitled to our opinions but I don't see it as a fer-**** thread. It wanders a bit, that I'll admit. There's tons of mis-information ALL OVER THIS PLACE. But that thread at least helps dispell the ATF is the only way to de-carbonize a rotary mantra around these parts. IMHO of course. Heck, I have not clue if it ate any carbon in my engine. In fact, I seriously doubt that my engine had any appreciable carbon buildup anyway. But the carb is clean and probably the runners too and that alone is worth the price of admission.

Never did the water cleaning so I can't compare. Guess I should've read the can first, it says it contains petroleum distillate and butyl cellosolve. Clearly that stuff will probably burn whereas water does not.

Yes, it does foam up like shaving cream. Is shaving cream petrol-based.

Thanks, I'll look into it - however, based on the pic of the can for this product, it is supposed to clean injectors too - just wondering how it would be applied for that application

Yes, the whole can. At least that's what the instructions said. (of course they wanna sell more, right? lol) I then took 'er out on the highway and ran at 70mph in 4th gear for about 10 miles. I figure if any carbon dislodged during the process then that would blow it out. I don't think all NAPA's carry this stuff but I'm sure you can get it on-line somewhere. I consider this preventative maintenance along with the 2-stroke oil premixing, regular oil changes, regular coolant flushes, etc.

Sounds good.
It's a day later. Car still run?
I think I'll pick some up and try it.

Well, I'll be damned.
Someone finally tried it...

Here's my own Power foam regimen: I spray only half a can down the carb while the engine is running, then shut off the motor and fill the carb with foam. After the foam liquifies, I hand crank it into the motor and repeat a couple of times to make sure that all the rotor faces get coated with it. Then I let it sit for anywhere from a half hour to a couple of hours, and then take the car out for a drive at highway speeds for at least 30 minutes to insure that the loosened carbon gets thoroughly blown out. I usually notice that the engine runs smoother, and seems to be more free-revving. Incidentally, the stuff works pretty much the same on piston engines too. It's specially formulated to evaporate much more slowly than regular carb cleaners in a hot motor, so that it can work more effectively at dissolving deposits. And, it won't harm catalytic converters or exhaust components like ATF can. Good stuff.

And thanks for the vote of confidence, Bob. -Mike

mike,

i'll give you "two thumbs up" for the power foam as well. i bought some along with the amsoil synthetic..i went amsoil crazy i sprayed half the can into the throttle body while my son revved the engine up and i used the rest on the injectors. cleaned it right up. that was money well spent.
