Potentially Stupid Clutch Question :) 13b on 12a

I'm looking around for a clutch, I have 12a engine, and a lot of places are listing "1983-1988", and I'm wondering if the 13b clutch will work on a 12a car? I wouldn't think so, but I'm confused by the listings I'm finding...

thanks!

i'll be doing a tranny swap soon and so getting a new clutch as well as other things to replace while the tranny is out...

i've found out that yes...they are fine for both 12a and 13b for the years you listed...

must not be turbo!

Just get the clutch that matches your flywheel. Make sure the flywheel matches the rotors in the engine.

Mine has FC clutch components too. They came off of an '86-'88 NA and are the Daikin brand. They look like the Street Strip components my friend got from Racing Beat. The starter even says 87RX7 on it in that wrecking yard yellow. Very becoming. All of this is getting fitted to a '76 ribcase tranny.

The only problem with the FC starters is they sound like crap.

I agree. They sound like a stuck pig, all sqealing like they do. Last year at a rotary meet, when everyone was getting ready to leave, it was one squealing pig after another when the FCs and FDs were starting lol.

If you wanna hear a decent sounding starter, you should hear my '74 starter. It's got a larger diameter field coil housing than your typical '79-'85. It's the biggest manual starter I've seen, similar to my top mount '73 starter, which has probably the same size field coil housing (very large and very high in the engine bay... yuck!). My automatic Cosmo's starter is still bigger though (at least it's down in the usual location). It's a woolly mammoth!

If I could have the sound of a '74 starter from an '86-'92 NA starter, I'd be happy.

By the way, if you've heard my 20B sound clips, I was using a slow cranking, nearly dead 1st gen starter. Not sure what year, but probably '79 to around '82 maybe. I guess that means that the engine is ok since it fires up even with such a slow starter. I can't wait to try it out with the faster cranking FC starter.

After the MMO treatment last year, I used the FC starter without the spark plugs installed, and it blasted MMO particles all over the place. Objects 15 feet away got misted upon (drenched, or so it seemed since MMO spreads out so much). The starter cranked very fast with no plugs, and did an excellent job of cranking my freshly rebuilt 13B last month even with misfiring plugs. I don't foresee any problems cranking three rotors. Too bad it'll sound like an FC... untill it fires up.
