Possible reasons my car is over weight?

I own a '85 GSL. The little sticker on the door says that it weighs 2875lbs.

My Haynes manual says that it should be more like 2385lbs or so. I checked the engine, it's 12A, so it's not that.

I was just wondering where 500lbs would come from? It hasn't really been modded out or anything, it's pretty much stock except for the muffler, which was replaced before I bought it. Someone has done some rewiring work on it. They replaced the fuse box with a newer one (instead of using old glass tubes, it has the new plastic fuses) and they've installed a CD player, but I don't think that weighs 500lbs.

Any ideas?

the haynes manual covers different year models maybe that was what the earlier or the majority of that gen's weighed. different things were changed during that generation or any other for that matter that could've affected the weight.

I think you guys are looking at the maximum weight filled to capacity. Look at the loads capacity weight, subtract it from the weight you are looking at, in you will have curb weight.

FYI, the literature I have here ('85 sales brochure) says the curb weight of a GSL is 2325 lbs. with a manual tranny, 2390 lbs. (2380 in CA) with an auto, add 55 lbs. for air, and I imagine a likewise amount for PS (although that is not listed in the curb weight specs).

The heaviest first gen is the GSL-SE at 2575 lbs. stock. Add for PS.

The sticker says you can stuff 390lbs of people in there. `,=o)

so it's only like 100lbs off if you do that. I that's more reasonable than 500. Thanks. `,=o)

I had to drive so close to the wheel i couldnt fully take my foot off the clutch, we must have hit 3000lbs. I scraped like crazy getting over the parking lot speed bumbs, it wasnt fun.

I know what you mean man. The second day I had my car back from the shop I ended up with 5 people in it. 2 in front, 3 under the hatch.

They all fit, and they fucked up my seats, and it was the shittiest drive i've ever taken. They still don't believe me that you can get in trouble for that. They don't seem to understand that it's illegal to ride without seatbelts, let alone in the back of a car that is only made for 2 people.

I don't like some of my friends... They're stupid. They're pretty selfish, and when I tell them to get their own car, they go, "I have my own car!" And then I'm like, "Well then get your damn license so you can drive it. You're about to turn 18! You still have a permit!"

That guy is a loser.

My '85 is sitting on the bumpstops right now because I have my toolbox (upper, lower, and middle) in it along with a big box of RX-7 parts and the usual car stuff. Combined with the porkage of a full-options GSL, basically with stock HP it takes a while to get up to speed

My '80 weighed 2210lb with an empty tank, no spare or jack, and no interior from the rear deck back. (Left the steel cover and carpet in 'cos I didn't feel like pulling it - plus I needed the cover for my camera mount) BTW that 2210 is with A/C so it could probably drop another 30-35lb if I took that out too. (Hey it still had a full charge of R-12 - seems just wrong to strip out a working A/C system)

I believe GVWR means Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, meaning the maximum weight the car can be.

Hey Wattz... I have a friend like that too-but he's a good guy, but still! I normally say this to him: "QUIT F*CKING BUMMING RIDES OFF ME!!!!!"

That sitcker is the GVWR, the gross vehicle weight rating. That is what it should weigh with all passengers, cargo, and operating fluids.

My 81 S tipped the scale at 2440 with me in it.

I beat you Felix

BTW--On the subject of weight... How can I lighten my 85 GS without going so far as ripping out the carpet and passenger seat or spending bundles of money?

Replace all the body parts with fibre glass.

`,=o) I had an offer for a whole fibre glass front end for $200 but I didn't take it 'cause I was getting a normal front end for $75

I had my '85 weighed for a college class once with me in it with about 1/2tank of gas. It was 2375lbs. Granted, I don't have unessessary things under the hood. Spare tire gone, some other stuff too. I think the weight on the door is when the car is loaded with two people and some cargo maybe?

What about removing the interior carpeting, then removing/chiseling/grinding the asphalt sound deadening off. Then replacing the carpeting.

Cheap, hidden, save some poundage, but labor intensive.

And if your gonna do that you could remove the metal braceing for the storage bins and the sound deadening under them and just put carpet over the area.

Just my $.02

Corner weights of my GSL-SE

As far as weight reduction... What can you live without? Generally, weight reduction stuff is completely a personal choice, unless you are a professional racer and make money at it, or are fabulously wealthy and have a dedicated track car for the weekends.

Some people remove stereos and speakers, AC components, power steering, spare tires, jacks (make sure you have AAA and a cell phone that works form wherever you are, and/or have a can of that flat fixer stuff), emissions equipment, lighter exhaust (anything without cats), lighter wheels, lighter battery, replace body panels with ones made of lighter materials, lexan windows, and on and on...

Basically, if it doesn't help you go faster, can you still think of a reason to have it attached to the car? The stuff that you can justify losing for the sake of being lighter is the stuff you can pull off. Some things can be pulled off as a result of another mod, like losing the emissions stuff after installing a new exhaust system without cats.

How fast do you want to live in squalor?
