Unhappy Pop goes the apex seal...

Well, it figures. I decide not to sell the car, get it running and as I was running it today to keep the battery charge, I hear a nice pop from the engine and then the idle goes to hell. I had feelings the compression was starting to drop, but I never expected something quite so sudden.. Anyhow, I guess it's time for a rebuild. I actually want to rebuild it myself, but I've got some questions. Basically, what special tools are needed to do this job right? Pretty much the only rebuild tools we don't have would be special rotary-specific tools, if there even are any. But anyways, I figured the cost up for parts from Mazdatrix and included new rotor housings too. Came up to $1800, kinda salty, but the car is worth it to me. Anyone have any recomendations on other places to get parts, or even a rebuilt engine for less than my projected cost of $1800? Thanks...

you could probably find used housings and save $600 then. You can find a used rebuild or fresh rebuild for that price and forgo the rebuild.

For $1800 you can get a professional rebuild, although without new rotors.

By the way, one of the most crucial parts of the rebuild is measurements. Check out the Haynes manual. There is a lot of wear measuring to be done.

I've got the Hayne's manual.... and the factory (yes, a REAL factory, not a cruddy reprint.. ) And yes, I see all the measuring that has to be done? What's your point? I have and know how to use a micrometer and such... plus, I kinda WANT to do it myself... I'm sick like that... LOL

I am in the process of rebuilding my 85 13B. Revolutionrotary.com has a complete rebuild kit with bearings for around 750.00. These are all genuine Mazda parts by the way. Atkinsrotary.com sells a great rebuild video tape which might be of help to you. It actually is for 2nd gen 13B but there are alot of usefull tips in the video.
Good Luck !!!

Yeah go to www.revolutionrotary.com Mazdatrix is higher than HELL. There nice people tho, but if you need preformance parts go to mazdatrix. If you want stock parts call revolution rotary....

I got the follwing, got a complete 12A ready for rebuild, perfect front housing, intermediate housing, and rear housing, both rotors hosuings are near perfect.. I got 1 good front rotor and 3 rear rotors. 2 E shafts, and other misc 12A stuff... All in great shape...

Was gonna rebuild it, but going a different route after spending all the money on these parts. If you need something let me know....

DAMMIT i should have read closer, its a 13b, forget what i said unless anyone else needs 12A parts
