Lightbulb Poll yourself -- Best non-typical performance mod?

For an explanation of what I mean by "non-typical"... everyone knows mod'ing the carb, new exhaust, porting, etc. ya know, the typical things, will improve performance. But what have you done either as a mistake, or intentionally that improved your performance that is not a typical thing?

Two things I have done ('cause I'm cheap):
One was to take the belt off my smog pump (the cat's coming off in a few weeks anyway, so no problems there).... that was a SIGNIFIGANT power increase.

The other thing I did, was to drill holes into the top of my air cleaner around the edges (no un-filtered air enters the system though).

How about you?

I just put Royal Purple synthetic fluids in my trany and rear end. I know it's not, but it feels faster(smother anyway)

Don't forget the E-fan conversion, but I guess that's fairly "typical"

I made a carbon fibre heat shield , that fits above the header, to keep the intake cool

Also I modded a firebird shaker hood scoop, to my 12a, thru a 625 cfm AFB carb on a modded 12a intake manifold, the scoop is functional

I may start producing the heat shield, if there is enough interest, cost around 60.00.

air box flapper mod, just did it and the car feels quicker, aAlthough, i also took out the fuel air and oil filters and replaced them, changed the oil and tranny fluid, nothing looked like it had been changed in forever, pitch black oil, visibly filthy fuel filter, black air filter. yeah.... the car feels like new by comparison

The Smog pump....... I'm thinking we don't have it here in Oz....we don't even have a Cat converter...because that rule didn't come in until 87 here I think..... how much power do you get from taking out the smog pump?

How much power? I couldn't tell ya numbers, but what I CAN tell you, is I just cut the belt off ('cause I was too lazy to take everything else off just to take off that one belt) and it was an INSTANTLY NOTICABLE difference. Even more than with your A/C Compressor turned on.

If you don't have a cat or are going to take it off within a few months (avg is 6 months or 6000 miles) then disconnecting your smog pump (sometimes also called an air pump which is different from your air compressor for your A/C) is an easy, cheap mod.

Because if you don't take the cat off after (or pretty soon after) disconnecting the smog pump, it'll burn out your cat. The smog pump brings cool air to make it work.

See this previous thread of mine where people told me the same thing:

I've got a 1980 Plymouth Horizon that the exhaust pipe broke in half yesterday... It's loud as a mother now, but it's got a lot more get up and go!!!

Just thought I'd share that today.

If you disconnect your smog pump, will it just burn out your cat, or just clog it up? I dont really care if it burns, as long as it doesnt restrict flow.
