Smile Please Inform Me With Your Opinions...Again

Ok, what are the "average" compression numbers for a 12A? Im looking at an engine that is supposed to have only 87K miles on it with "compression numbers ranging from 8.3-8.7, with an average of 8.5". Is this good? The guy im buying the engine from isint actually a guy, he works for a shop, and they do have a real compression tester, well thats what he tells me anyway...So, if I buy this, he wants $450 + shipping, seem decent to you guys? Did I actually find an affordable engine that just might work for me?? It just seems too good to be true I guess...Im waiting for a response as to why it was pulled from the car.

~T.J.

PS - An 87K mile 1983 engine would be a nice match for my 80K mile 1983 car .

Oh, he did say that its missing an ignitor (pulled for another car), and it wouldnt hurt to clean the carb, but that stuff doesnt really matter cause I'm basically just gonna use the parts off my cars old engine anyway .

I've paid as little as $50 bucks for an engine...with transmision Only reason they pulled it was the guy wanted to stuff a 350 he already had just for kicks. 'The guy' was the manager of an auto parts store who just offered it to me when i told him the model of my car to pick up a fuel filter hehehe....sorry....i have the feeling i'll need it soon enough... i haven't checked compression tho, so i might get a surprise

Maybe around you...

Ive been to almost every junk yard around, and no one has a running 12A, and if they do, they want over $4-500 for it...If anyone can hook me up with a good cheap engine I would appreciate it...

The compression numbers are good. Mazda spec low limits are 6kg with a maximum variance of 1.5kg. I believe 8kg's is about full compression.
As to the price, it is worth whatever it is worth to you. We don't live where you do, here in Topeka, I have seen three RX's go for $10 a piece at the police impound. By the way, that was the whole car, not just the engine. I have no idea of the engine condition though.
good luck,
hanman

definitly dont contact coveys in everett, last time i asked about a 12a it was like $600+ with no warrenty.. i think 500$ for a motor would be tops for a 12a. i sold my block that had low miles for 400 and the guy came and picked it up. but i was still amzed that i got that kind of $ for it.

Wow, you guys are REALLY lucky. My local yard charges an arm and a leg for most parts. For instance, the dome light lense was $5.00!? WTF? It broke while installing, so I had to glue it back together. Oh well, I can't say that I haven't gotten some 'good deals' from them though.
