please help me diagnose this problem! (pics)

well i was taking off my carb and intake manifold to clean it up a little bit only to find a much bigger problem. I am guessing this is the result of a bad radiator. It is literally spewing brown thick slime.

also how should i get this stuff outta there? Is it safe to stick a hose in my radiator and just try to flush it all out?

It looks like it could be some sort of radiator "stop leak" additive- if you flush it out- you might re-open the leak- it happened to me a couple of years back.

ohhhh i see. I thought it could have been rust mixed with water and anti-freeze. If it is a stop leak thing i am definatley flushing it out and replacing the hoses.

Any other diagnoses?

When you get the intake and carb installed and running, flush the cooling system with one of the off the shelf flush systems. If you want to get a head start, remove the block drain, tape off the intake and exhaust ports with duct tape and use a hose. Then remove the lower radiator hose and do the same with the radiator.

That cooling system has been neglected for a long time to be in that condition. Flush the system until the water runs clear, before you add the antifreeze. Don't forget to open up the heater so the core gets flushed too.

The way the intake ports look, you may need one.
