pilot bearing

i replaced my clutch and pilot bearing. i now have loud noises when the clutch is engaded or not, just luder when it is. i looked at the fsm and noticed an oil seal. in my clutch kit it came with the pilot and i wheel bearing lookin thing that didnt fit anywhere. i put the pilot in but didnt know how far to bang it in and didnt use a seal. So, how far in does the pilot go and am i suppose to have a seal? didnt remember having one. local autoparts store has one i think.

The pilot is supposed to be greased and it needs the seal to keep the grease in. Before you wipe it out, get a seal, pull the tranny, grease the bearing and put the seal in. The pilot bearing should be all the way in when theres a slight gap at the bottom of the hole IIRC. The big wheel bearing thing is the throwout bearing. Replace your old one with the new one while you have the tranny out. Look in the tranny bellhousing and you'll find the throwout bearing mounted on the fork.

i should have clarified, i changed the throw out, clutch set and pilot. the other bearing thing was for other applications i was told. i will get the seal tomorrow and check it out. too bad my "complete" clutch kit isnt all there. thanks carl. on a side note, i tried the harbor freight pilot removal tool, and i grinded it down all day and still couldnt get it to work. a little grind on the autozone tool and i had it out in about 5 min.

iirc is what exactly. new to the terms.

After you get done inserting the pilot bearing all the way. Make sure you put some white grease on the input shaft splines and also where the throw out bearing fork pivots and where the T/o bearing is held on by the fork....

I believe the FSM states to add tranny lube in the shifter housing. I myself prefer to use a good bearing grease on both *****, the socket and the alignment pin.
