I had heard about this, always heard it was the corvette they were trying it for lOL But anyways, GM wasted a lot of money on this, somewhwere to the tune of like 200 million I think?

Well anways, mazda and their lil 4 rotor attempt, and the winning of the 24 hour lemans, is why ford own almost all of mazda... Anyone else wanna try to develope a 4 rotor, i think the pricetag for that little idea was like over 400 million

I thought I would chime in here with my memories, I hope they are still correct.
GM paid $50 mil. for the (3 year) right to develop their own engines. Aside from the Monza, it was also planned to go in a Corvette, and a Chevette. There was one part of the (proposed) agreement that GM refused to sign, "co-development". It would have meant that both companies would share development information with the other. SEALS were the issue of the day and poor sealing is why the rotaries were "dirty", and had a bad reputation. GM thought that THEY could fix the seal problem and if so, it would give the leg up, because they would not have to then share the technology. They failed.
The Mercedes C-111 prototype is what turned me on and tuned me into rotaries. 50 were made and had 3 different engines, a 2, a 3, and a 4 rotor. Had it gone into production it would have been Mercedes 2nd "gull wing" car. It had a few other inovative ideas as well such as 3 color tailights, green for accelerating, yellow for coasting, and red for braking. The 4 rotor was said to do almost 180 mph. In 1970 Mercedes decieded that the target price of $19,500 was more than the market would pay for the car and shelved it.
I have kept every scrap of info from that time and have it somewhere in a box. The rotary concept was also written about seperatly in the very late '60s when all this was happening. I was one of the few people in the St. Louis area to have a rotary car when I bought my new '73 RX-3 Station Wagon, very late in '72. I have had to forget a lot of my personal goals from that time, but I have kept the one for owning a C-111.

Not yet!! I have actually expanded my dream to include a museum of rotary vehicles. Maybe then I could get all such things donated!

mazda is kicking *** lately.

I work at a mazda dealer and our sales have shot up after the introduction of the "mazda test drive experience"

instead of just handing the customer the keys and letting them loose, there is a planned out "course" that takes about 25 minutes (at posted speed limits)

you go through everthing: s turns, merging, accelerating from 0 to 70, braking from 70 to 25, high speed cornering, its alot of fun actually.

a guy down in service has the record of 14 minutes and 24 seconds in his Modded 90 GTI. I am hopeing for 14 flat or better when my turbo II swap is done. I have managed 15m 15s in a 5 speed mazda 6.

Not me,,,, 30+ years ago!
I bought my first rotary car in '72, after reading about the engine for 3 - 4 years.
