Nice red 7... Whats with the Silver GSL up front.

 

I'm in New Brighton, MN. There are 4 other RX7's for sale where I got mine. The silver '84 GSL, a grey '83 GSL, and two '87's. All are around $1000. The one i happened to get has 80k, so I hope it will last at least another 50k.

looks like a nice car, any rust? I wish you would have posted here before to tell you to look under the starage bin compartments for rust. Hopefully yours isn't bad if there is any at all. I made the mistake of getting one that had pretty bad storage bin rust and ended up having to cut it all out and welding in new pieces. Trust me it sucks.

 

I'd actually like to ask you a little more about that as I need to do the same.

How did you get everything to line up. I know there's a suspension mounting point there. Did you make the new one fit into the same spot as the old one or is it shifted any?

How did you hold it while welding? Gas or electric welder?

 

I just cut out from the floor up the suspension mount is still the original one.

I used a MIG welder, I think I started from the outside of the car and held it in place then tacked it in. Since I didn't cut the piece from the parts car out exactly the same as the whole that I cut out of my "good" car I had to fill in the gaps with some strips of sheetmetal I bought at teh local hardware store. I also welded in some angle iron for some added strength.

The car is rust free. I checked the storage bin areas, and the wheel wells. Everything is perfect. I just need to be careful in the winter, so it doesn't start to rust.

and to keep it from rusting in the winter, just do this

then come spring, its like drive a new car all over again.

I may be heading down to the cities next weekend and am wondering if you could tell me how to find the other Rx's that are for sale. Or even better can you post some contact info on for the seller.

 

I had mine repainted in MN in 1993. Hennepin Auto Repair. He's an artist really. He strips the entire boy, removes all the moldings, and wet sands until there is no orange peel.

I also have the dreaded rust spots. Unfortunately I didn't find them until after the repaint. I've had two 1st gens with rust in the storage area and seen it in a number of others. I doubt many exist without it. It happens because there are two sheet metal layers in the rear wheel wells. There are two small holes in the exterior layer, I'm not sure why. Water gets in through these holes and sits between the interior and exterior layers. I haven't had this fixed yet, but am not looking forward to the expense.

 

I probably shoud learn to weld before I do this, or otherwise get someone to do it. What's a MIG welder?

Mine's rusted through the middle of the suspension mount, so I'm gonna need to replace the entire wheel well and suspension mount.

How did you detatch the suspension mount from the old wheel well to put on the new one?

Metal Inert Gas welder. Inert gas from a pressurized bottle is fed into a special pistol so that a "shield" of inert gas surrounds the plasma bead as you lay down a weld. Your weld rod doesn't exist. The pistol has fittings and tubing that allow a wire to be fed to the tip in the center of the gas "shield" where the welding action occurs. The purpose of all this, if I remember right, is to exclude oxygen from getting into the welds so that they'll be stronger...

 

Hmmm.. I dunno if anyone has a MIG welder here... Only ones I've seen are Electric ones...

Don't take this the wrong way new Red RX-7 owner, but I wouldn't completely trust those guys at RX-7 Heaven. They have a large inventory of parts, including speedo/dash clusters. But they are very strange and have bad reputation from the Better Bessence Bereau. I'd only go there for used parts if you need some quick and get them over priced.

 

I know... but they have already helped me a lot. I needed new windshield trim, and they gave me some, and put it on for me for free. They helped me install a stereo, and told me how to take things apart. Anyways.. I plan on doing most of the work myself, and mabey I can find someone else with a 1st gen in the area to help me out.

I am a 1st gen owner in Minnesota. IF you have any questions just let me know. There are plenty others too. Infact, I'm transplanting a 13b for a fellow 1st gen owner and some other mod's as well. As a minnesota resident, you may want to join the North star Rotary Rockets club. Do a search engine on it and you'll find it right away. There are several people in the club right in the cities who could help you there too ofcourse.

 

The problem is getting worse. Instead of just doing it from idle, its now surging and hesitating sometimes when accelerating from any speed. I replaced fuel filter and all the other little things i could. Wacky Rotory, did you ever get the PM i sent you? I could use some help right now. I LOVE this car, and want to keep it running good..
