I think the conclusion was that I was driving with a broken tooth and not enough fluid. There was an argument on the forums when I did this about whether the teeth broke off, or they actually melted.

After a long discussion with my mechanic, we came to the conclusion that i must have had a tooth on the gear that was partially or completely missing, which caused slippage, and in combination with the lack of there being enough transmission fluid, caused me to slowly melt the gear down.

My mechanic said he had never seen anything like this in his his 25+ years of working on Mazdas and that it wasn't that the teeth broke off, as is usually the case, since there were no pieces floating around in the fluid and if you look carefully at the smoothed gear, you can see where the heated metal squeezed out on either side of the gear.

Moral of the story: ALWAYS double check your fluid levels even if you are sure you put some in!

Unfortunately those aren't worn synchromesh teeth. While the damage looks spectacular, it has nothing to do with the poster's question. The synchromesh teeth are the tiny triangular ones, some are brass, the others are steel.

i've really never been able to actually see the wear on the syncros, but if it grinds when shifting between gears, they're worn.

Well you're basically looking for what looks like ground off marks, non-uniform triangles along the circumference of the syncro, excessive end play, ect.

Hey thanks for the info, i couldn't find my way around a transmission to save my life... (haven't had to put much thought into it, but that's sure to change)

So then, i assume the syncros are the brass bits in my pictures... the ones that are in good shape and not horribly destroyed...
