That trunk looks hideous! It looks like they painted a piece of cardboard to match and then mounted it up. The rest looks okay, but it looks like someone was in a hurry to get finished instead of making it look good.
I like this one more:

It's a German car, and it's done very proffesional.

7 verts by mazda total as a study only. best knowlage puts two in aus, one in nz , two in japan the rest destroyed. several years ago I heard that one of the ones in aus was totaled in a shipping mishap. none of those cars where ever sold. many places across the globe did do aftermarket verts though. the one in the pics is simlar to an eary avatar.
Those 7 were not really "by mazda" (toyo kogyo) more than others built by other distributors/dealers with similar formula.
rotary emotions, why does the top of that car look like it is not fullly closed?

Hack Job Convertible
I must agree with whoever says it is a hack job. That trunk is the worst I have seen. That is similar to the trunk used on the Avatar, which was VERY EXPENSIVE, PROFESSIONALLY DONE hack job.
Take a look at my amateur, backyard hack jobs, see page 3.

If you think most people would say that the 1st gen cars look good as convertibles if they are done well.
As for that German conversion, I would know right away it is German, from the way the top folds down. They made it like that on King Ludwig's carriage in the 1880s, and every Volkswagen convertible had the same design - sticks up so high it blocks your rear view.

Somewhere, an RX-2 is missing it's tail lights:

I used a highly modified Fiat Spyder top mechanism for this car. It does not fold down completely inside the body because of the shock towers. This had the most extensive bodywork of any custom I have built.

The GSL-SE convertible was sold to someone in the Bay Area a few years ago, and I lost track of it. I painted it bright silver on top, and faded it to a charcoal silver grey on the bottom. I actually had people ask me if it was stainless steel!

I used an Alpha Spyder top mechanism for this car, and a section of a Corolla roof and sun roof for the trunk lid. This top folds down completely inside the body, and fits the RX7 better, but the Fiat is a better mechanism.
