Performance Gains...

I have the rats nest removal finished and the cats removed. I am considering, although very undecided, about making the secondaries mechanical. I am going to do a cold air intake, reguardless of whether there is any potential gain. I am not putting any money into the engine yet. It is all going into prep and paint, and various body and interior parts. The engine modifications are going to come last, as I will pull the engine when it gets painted and I will take full advantage of that sucker being out.

However, in the meantime, with the factory stock base model 12A, what jury rigged or half @$$ed mods have you guys done or in your experience found to actually do anything. It has been years since I have had a stock motor, and I usually dive into the motor first, so this is odd for me. Basically what I am saying is I want to do all the junkyard mods I can. I want to see what actually makes a difference. If you want to help out please do, I am basically bored and have too much time on my hands.....

cheapest way to go faster is weight reduction

junkyard performance.... hmmmm, play with timing advance and better igntion setup. this is what i like to do before anything else. going with mechanical secondaries is nice for that extra little top end umphh. along with the rats nest i take it you removed other engine accessories?

how are you going to be setting up your cai?

Yes I have removed everything from under the hood that doesnt make the car operate. I need to find a timing light so I can dial in the timing and tune the carb. For the CAI I will either run a large hose to the factory air cleaner, or I will make my own little air box and run some tubing out of it to some hose..... Whatever I deem more effieciant. Pretty much its not going to be predetermained, itll be, "whats lying around in the geerage..." So most probably Ill use the factory air cleaner...... I am keeping the full interior, but anything under the car or the hood is fair game.

Best way would be to stick some 4.44's in the rear.

rats removal is good for about 3 flywheel hp. There have been about 15 free or cheap mods threads in the past try searching.

Transistor trick 2nd gen ignition is probably the best "performance per cost" mod that is out there right now....

Chris, as you know I did the 2GCDFIS and swear by it, I also have a timing light, looks like you'll have to come back up here sooner than you thought....

I also swear by synthetic oil in the drivetrain.

I use synthetics in everything I drive, except inside the rotary at least. I will probably be switching the Diff and tranny over to synthetic. Like I said I would love to do the 2GCDFIS but I have yet to find an FC to source parts from....

Out of curiosity I saw a thread awhile back about a Kia rear end with 4.44s? Does anyone know off hand what the ratio was for a factory base model 7? It is an 85, if that makes any difference... Because I know my junkyard has some Kia's sitting around, I forget, was it the Sportage? J/W...

It is the Sportage. I think its the older ones, oldern then 1996 or something. The front diff is 4.44, and the rear is 4.77 or something like this. Both diffy's are open though. The stock gearing on a base model Rx-7 is 3.9, and for the GSL-SE its 4.1 or something.

Okay, just so I actually know what I am doing, it has been years since I messed with a diff. And I couldnt really remember then either, but the higher the number the better the launch right? and the lower the number the better the top end? Or am I backwards.... Also, do the front and rear diffs both bolt into the pig? or which diff will I need to pull.

I want a fairly quick car, not "super" fast, but also a street friendly easy to drive car. Which retains some economy. (Although not much )

I'd stick with 4.44 for what you want. That'd be the front diff if no name has his facts streight.

12A cars had 3.90s SE's had 4.10s

First, how much of a difference will there really be between 4.44 and 4.77? would it be that noticeable? Second, all the threads I am digging up say it will only work in an SE. I have a base model 85 with rear drums, Does anyone know if I can just get the ring and pinion and use that? Or am I screwed without finding at least an SE rear end?

Switching just the ring and pinion will be a biatch.

All 84-85's are large axel rear end cars. GSL-SE and all 12A's.

If it works in an SE, it'll work in ANY 84/85. You can even keep your drums.

Did a ring and pinion swap this week, its not very difficult, but go to a shop to have the pinion pressed out and the bearing removed, then replace the bearing onto the new pinion and reverse, its a very simple swap.

hhhmmmm Well I just finished reading some of the threads so I think I know what I need, I suppose I will go ahead and do this since I have an open diff anyway. I dont really want to keep the drums, they are just sorta, well there. I got a GSL rear end a few days ago, although I dont know which 7 it will go under, probably my silver '81. But I will do this swap to my 85 since it is like my junkyard test bed.

The 81 has all my nice expensive and shiney RB products I am just remembering how nice it was to work on a relatively fresh and incredibly clean engine. as opposed to this pathetic oil covered mess.... but I still love it I just would love to make it into a stoplight car. Nothing too serious, but enough to give anyone a surprise when it goes green. Hell it already does, After rebuilding the carb and removing the rats nest, as well as having the cats removed and a now full 2 inch exhaust. Its peppy, and I like it. It will walk the local Hondas, and the only reason they give me a try is I always stomp them into oblivion with the silver one.

So thats the main reason I made this thread, I want to know all the cheapest mods I can do. When I actually have some cash I can feasibly throw into it, without becoming flat broke, I will. So in the meantime, keep your eyes open. Because I will be taking pics as I go along, as most of you alreay know I do. I kinda want it to be a writeup on the cars progress from daily beater, to garage queen. I think it will be cool, and it will probably go abit faster than most of you may suspect

And before anyone gets upset about the Hondas comment, the local ricers consist of: An early 90s Accord, huge wing, body kit that is primer while the car is like forest green
A mid 90s Civic Hatch, body kit although front bumper is missing, flat black, huge wheels.
A Plymouth Neon, purpleish pink, no body kit no rims, but huge spoiler, hood scoop and fart can.
A Mercury tracer, red with rust accents (LOL!) some autozone decal set all over, 13 inch gold wire rims. And it is skate boarded.
There are several others, I dont know any of these people but no matter how many times I race them, AND win. They always show up some night later on in the week ready for more *** whipping good fun. They are the stereotypical ricers. And I love having them in town, gives me somone to pick on and entertain myself with.... Yeah I know its wrong, and I probably do need a life. But it just never gets old....
