I believe it is an 8" and I plan on purchasing one next year. Since it has all the stock mounting points for suspension and all I think it is a good deal plus you can then pick from a wide variety of rear diff. gears from summit racing and jegs and such. There are other 7 rear conversions but not as simple as the 8" rear in my opinion. The others you have to swap out internals and stuff and if you arn't familiar with doing it then your screwed. But take in to consideration that you will need to get the rear brakes all thought they are a dime a dozen plus you will have the more common five lug pattern.

Looks like I will be buying a 9" rear for the 7. The 9" has many more rear end ratios and is stronger than a 12 bolt GM rear.

i spoke to grant on granny shop according to him you can buy the hole set up with new lsd and choice of gear ration , new forged steel axles choice of bolt pattern, and all the mounting brackets for the rx for about 1600 also with the brake brackets to use your existing brakes or you can add different brakes.

Pay the 895 for the housing with forged axlesa and then snag the diff. and brakes at a junk yard for under 100.00 You can get a new detroit style locker sarting at around 260.00 through summit racing and new gears of your choice starting at 119.00 and axles starting 110.00. Gear ratios run from 2.91:1 ratio to an outrageous 7.33:1 ratio.

If your car is doing anything under 250 to the wheels the stock rear should hold up. I would not dump $800 on a weak, 28 spline, 8 inch rear end, if you are going to be at this level. If you are going to be above that level, spend the extra cash and just get an 8.8 rear end. with little work they will handle 400+ to the rear wheels, and many aftermarket parts, and gears are also available.

I am currently in the process of swapping an 8.8 into my RX2. The 96+ Ford Explorer comes complete with 11.25' disc brakes, posi diff, 4.11 gears, and a 5 X 114.3 wheel pattern. They can be found for under $500. It will cost you another $500 to shorten the housing, axles, and weld on new perches. This is a much better deal if you are willing to do a little work.
